2.02m for NRL Grand Final

2.02m viewers watched the Sea Eagles crush the Warriors, delivering Nine a huge ratings share over Seven and TEN.

The 2011 NRL Grand Final stumped up with 2.02m viewers with half of them in Sydney and a win for Sunday night.

The Sea Eagles crushed the Warriors 24 to 10 at ANZ Stadium last night, with 1.02m viewers in Sydney, 524,000 in Brissy and 347,000 in Melbourne. Once again the entertainment showed the AFL how to put on a show, even if it was heavy with sponsors and NRL cheerleaders.

The numbers dipped slightly on 2010’s 2.09m and were well down on the 2.41m in 2009 when Melbourne Storm competed.

Spilling into primetime the match helped Nine to a huge networks share of 35.5% over Seven’s 26.4% and TEN’s 22.6% which now makes this a week to watch.

Due to the timeslot variations in different markets, direct comparisons are a little unfair. But Nine also scored well with Underbelly: Razor on 1.3m and 60 Minutes on 1.22m. Person Of Interest is sitting at 658,000.

Seven News was best for Seven on 1.29m, followed by Sunday Night (1.22m), and Wild Boys (986,000). A Bones repeat was overrun by first run dramas, with just 665,000 -fourth in its slot.

TEN’s Terra Nova premiered to 1.2m -a good figure given it was as double episode from 8:30pm. Junior Masterchef with the PM as guest was 1.05m, doubling its lead in from The Renovators (508,000). But its new-look TEN News at Five premiered to just 288,000, well below the audience that might have sampled it if it had followed the AFL Grand Final. When it isn’t against the NRL Grand Final we’ll get a better idea of how it compares with previous programming.

Grand Designs Revisited was 856,000 as the best for ABC1 followed by ABC News (736,000) and The #No.1 Ladies Detective Agency (725,000).

Best for SBS was Planet Egypt on 213,000.

The Bolt Report‘s total audience was 194,000 from 2 broadcasts. Insiders total audience was 242,000 from 3 broadcasts.

The Big Bang Theory topped multichannels on 245,00.

Nine won Sunday.

  1. Adding New Zealand to the ratings are we?
Lets add the hundreds of thousands of Americans who would have caught the AFL Grand Final on ESPN2 on 9pm/12midnight US time on Friday night/Saturday morning.
How about all those Marshall Islanders who tuned in on Australia Network?
    What a joke…

  2. People aren’t seriously suggesting that New Zealand ratings should be added to Australia’s just because the A.F.L Grand Final outrated the N.R.L Grand Final, are they?

  3. Dans Dans…you can add the AFL ratings from NZ to the total if you like..
Good luck finding them ….they never make the cut off point…
It is as popular as the test pattern

    Thanks for playing..

  4. If we are adding NZ ratings to the Grand Final NRL score, can we also please add NZ’s two screenings of the AFL grand final (sat afternoon on Sky Sports and Sunday evening on Digital FTA) to the totals, as well as the ONE HD replay on saturday night too please?

    Thanks for playing…

  5. Given that there was only one Sydney team that’s pretty good figures. If the game had between say Dragons and Tigers I think you would have seen close to 3 million viewers.

  6. AFL v NRL or NRL v AFL, who cares.
Enjoy your footy or heaven forbid enjoy both games like i did.
There is room for both to be enjoyed without deriding the other.
So stop the family fued or I will take your balls off you !

    Bewdy, cricket season !!!

  7. I agree with Peter, Albury the telecast was just sad. I was in the choir and was disappointed that we barely got shown with two of our songs replaced with adds. What happened to the in our face camera of the dress rehearsal?

  8. NZ had 514k viewers watch the NRL.
On combined still a lower figure even with an unfair comparison.
As a Sydney sider it’s quite clear that AFL is a more popular code. I love Rugby and NRL, but lets not listen to hearts over heads. Facts are Facts.

  9. Yeah why was Nine so late last night, I mean the EPG had UB staring about 15 min later than normal at about 8:45 but even then it ran late and interestingly Nine and WIN were not in sync. Normally they are but last night WIN was several minutes behind Nine by the time they got to the Roast.

Goon numbers for Terra Nova for the 2 hours, hope it does well on Sundays even though I would have liked it during the week, like Wednesday to be about 36 hours after the US.

Wild Boys dipping below the magic million must be a worry for Seven, maybe they could add some dinosaurs to the mix, Cowboys and Dinos, might make a good movie 😉

It will be interesting to see if Nine can hold onto the lead, I don’t think they will, 2.5 Men will drop further in the ratings and Joy of Sets will be axed by the end of the week… lets see how things play out 🙂

  10. @Tim

    NZ ratings courtesy throng.co.nz/ratings/tv-ratings-2-october-2011

    Pay TV
    NRL: 514,340 (SKY Sport 2, 7:25pm – 9:15pm)

    FTA TV
    NRL: 177,010 (9:10pm – 11:05pm)

  11. And the NRL Grand Final Post Match Presentation was’nt shown in Melbourne Again, I hope it’s the last time GTV9 ignores the Post Match Presentations ever.

  12. I was surprised to find myself enjoying Terra Nova. Had to give it some artistic license but it was above expectations. Looking forward to next Sunday night.

  13. Will be interesting to see how much Adelaide numbers drop by in years to come because this was the one and only year the nrl GF isn’t going head to head with the SANFL GF

  14. Does anyone agree that the telecast of the NRL Grand Final pre-match entertainment was woeful? It was flat, lacked atmosphere and seemed curiously disconnected from what was probably a spectacular event. The interminable parade of retiring stars sitting uncomfortably in the back of 4WD utes arriving one by one was downright boring. Why not have the vehicles driving near the perimeter with cameras shooting back towards the bleachers so the shots of the players include the cheering and rapt expressions of the fans? The NRL Trophy walk from the helicopter went on and on and on and to deafening silence and with no shots of the expectant crowd to build the atmosphere. .And where were the wide angle shots from portable cameras in amongst the singers, dancers and musicians and the shows of the jubilant crowds? Those kind of shots were few and far between and could have added so much to the atmosphere of the pre-match TV coverage. There was little sense of building up to a climax – the start of the game.

  15. 9’s Person of Interest hasn’t got a chance – last night’s ep started 21 minutes after the advertised starting time.

Even allowing an extra 15 mins on the recorder for late running, I still missed the last 3 minutes of the climax.

Stuff you, 9 – your company deserves to go bankrupt by 2013.

  16. “which now makes this a week to watch”

Oh David, don’t makes jokes like that. Nine will find a way to screw things up just like they did a few weeks back when they had an even bigger head start with The Block finale and UB premiere and still lost to Seven

I enjoyed Terra Nova but why does the son character look nothing like his mother or sisters? Did I miss something?

  17. I Wonder what the ratings would be with Australia & New Zealand combined, the ratings for the NRL Grand Final in New Zealand would have been massive considering NZ was playing. The NRL Entertainment was much better than the AFL’s!
