Airdate: The Andrew Olle Lecture 2011

ABC1 will air the The Andrew Olle Lecture, to be given by Nine's political editor Laurie Oakes.

Later this month ABC1 will air the The Andrew Olle Lecture, to be given by Nine’s political editor Laurie Oakes.

This should cap off a stellar 12 months for Oakes, which included being inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame. Late last year he was awarded the Gold Walkley Award. In April he was awarded the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award at the Quill Awards.

Laurie Oakes will draw on some 47 years of media experience when presenting this year’s Andrew Olle Media Lecture, which was established in 1996 by 702 ABC Sydney presenters and staff to honour the memory of ABC Radio broadcaster Andrew Olle, who died in 1995 of a brain tumour.

The Nine Network’s political editor entered journalism with The Daily Mirror in 1964 and, since then, has worked in print, on screen and on radio, including running his own political journal The Laurie Oakes Report. In that time, he’s broken stories, including 1997’s travel rorts saga and 2010’s leaked information about Julia Gillard’s takeover of the Prime Ministership from Kevin Rudd.

In 1998 he won the Walkley Award for Journalistic Leadership and in 2010 was awarded the Gold Walkley for his reporting in that year’s election campaign. Also in 2010 he won the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award and, in 2011, he was honoured by the television industry with entry into the Logies Hall of Fame.

Mr Oakes’s lecture will focus on the blurring of the boundary between news and entertainment as it affects political coverage, and the impact of rapid technological change and the 24-hour news cycle. He will also express a few thoughts about spin, attitudes to politicians, and where it’s all heading.

10:30pm Sunday October 23 ABC1.
