An Australian animal trainer who trained the lead horse in a new Steven Spielberg movie features in the next Australian Story

An Australian animal trainer who trained the lead horse in a new Steven Spielberg movie, War Horse (pictured), features in the next Australian Story.

From being a Calamity Jane stunt woman at Movie World on the Gold Coast to Antonio Bandera’s Zorro body double and now world renowned animal whisperer, Zelie Bullen’s career reads like a ‘Wonder Woman’ resume.

Now she is stepping into the international spotlight as the woman who trained ‘Abraham’, the lead horse in Spielberg’s production of the Tony award winning play War Horse. The movie is already being likened to ET and tells the story of a boy who follows his beloved horse into the trenches in World War One.

Zelie Bullen married into the famous Bullen circus dynasty and her story of triumphs and tragedies reads like a film script. But it is the once in a lifetime performance she drew from the horse ‘Abraham’ that seems set to make Hollywood history.

Now Bullen is on a new quest. She says she is desperate to acquire ‘Abraham’ and bring him back to her property on the Gold Coast hinterland.

Presented by Lloyd Phillips, Hollywood Producer (The Tourist, Inglourious Basterds).

8pm Monday on ABC1.

  3. Hi!

Your story tonight on Australian Story was so inspirational. My query is that my cousin in the USA is also a horse trainer and I think would be so interested in seeing this “Story”.

May I purchase a copy of this Australian Story, I can pay and pick up at your convenience if there is this service available. If not, can you suggest anything? I would really like to send this to her.

With thanks, Jan (By the way I watch this program each week and it is great to see people one never hears about doing wonderful things)
