GO! on-sells shows to Foxtel

Fringe and Curb Your Enthusiasm are coming up on GO!, but Shameless and The Vampire Diaries switch to Pay TV.

GO! will return a new season of Fringe and Curb Your Enthusiasm “soon” and launch new shows The Hard Times of R.J. Berger and reality series I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

The Hard Times of R.J. Berger is an MTV series about RJ Berger (Paul Iacono), the unpopular kid at school whose appendage makes him the centre of attention. Shades of a teenage Hung, with a hint of The Wonder Years.

But GO! has also on-sold some shows to Foxtel that it had promised it would air including the US version of Shameless starring William H. Macy, and the third season of The Vampire Diaries.

Hart of Dixie, which features Rachel Bilson as a big time NYC doctor who is forced to move to country Alabama, will also premiere on Foxtel instead of GO!

This isn’t the first time shows from the Nine Network have been on-sold to Foxtel, with Gossip Girl and Smallville as previous examples.

In September Foxtel’s Brian Walsh told TV Tonight that it had made deals with the three commercial Free to Air networks for new content.

  1. Yeah last night was really bad for start times,The Mentalist 20 min late, Body of Proof about 15 min late, too bad if you only added 5 minutes to the end of your programing. It’s why I often add 30 minutes now for the commercial channels. I can understand live X-Factor but why was Nine running so late, isn’t Celebrity Apprentice pre-recorded?

  2. Fox8 announced most of this on their facebook page almost a month ago. But Go’s facebook page was still denying it until today. Now The Vampire Diaries fans are “go”ing off on Go’s facebook page.

  3. Nine can’t organise their main channel let alone bloody GO! After starting “The Mentalist” (or in Ninespeak “All New The Mentalist”) in Sydney a full twenty minutes late last night I give up on them – they might as well sell off all their programs and take up potato farming. I guess then they’d be a whole season late…

As predicted when they bought the rights to ‘Top Gear’ they’ve managed to drive away more than half the audience it had when on SBS. They screw up every decent show they have with constant schedule changes, repeats to the point of bug-eyed screaming madness, constant promos and banner nonsense that would drive any sane viewer to the loo for the duration, what often seems like more ads than actual program, and prime program starts that are so late much of the audience figure the program’s not on tonight for some reason and switch to something else.

  4. Not surprised i dont watch much GO! anyway. It was better when it started but now its crap, same with ONE and 7Two. THe better channels are 7Mate, ABC NEWS 24 and 11. THis is no surprise Nine are really strugling financially, what i dont understand is why did they buy these shows if they couldnt afford them?

  5. Looks like we have some time to wait for S3 of Vampire Diaries to air on Foxtel. Season 1 only started a couple of weeks ago, so middle of next year at the earliest. This is why I rarely watch commercial FTA!

  6. Gem could have easily aired Shameless, in either The Big C or Weeds slot when they’re finished. making them ‘adult’ timeslots for Gem. they could have aired ‘Episodes’ with it. what about Justified, thats going to Foxtel isn’t it. that would also have been better suited on Gem.

Go has become a joke, it was the best FTA network around and this year they seemed to have messed popular shows around like The Vampire Diaries, Fringe and Nikita. its like they just thought ‘f*** it” and decided to sell off some shows and make it more of a repeat channel for the shows sold to Foxtel which won’t rate in primetime anyway.

the article does say Fringe is returning ‘soon’ so I guess not all is lost, it’ll probably be played over the summer. as for next year I hope they start fresh and bring us more shows and not screw us around so much. I was expecting Curb to return over summer as its only 10 eps and will be finished by late January/early February.

  7. Kinda makes a mockery of this quote from an article here on 16 August (not having a go at you, David)
    – “It’s now less than a month away for the return of The Vampire Diaries in the US and there are strong signs it will be fast-tracked to GO!”

Annoying as it is to have this happen, shows like VD actually weren’t rating all that well. It pulled 192k in Week 20 after a dismal 87k in Wk19 and 95k in Wk17. Shameless was never going to do well, being a poor fit for either Nine or Go! audiences. Nine need the cash anyway.

At least one single-letter lady will be happy about Fringe S4 finally coming (2011/2012?). It rocks btw.

  8. well GO don’t really need the new shows like vampire diaries, hart of dixie, etc. considering they are now just the Top Gear/Big Bang Theory/Two and a Half Men/Repeated movies channel.

at least viewers might get to see these shows treated decently on foxtel.

  9. Simple question Nine… why? I don’t watch The Vampire Diaries, but wasn’t this one of GO!’s prime offerings? It has a strong following and surely fits the GO! demographic perfectly.

I understand on-selling new series that haven’t been screened on FTA before but the decision to on-sell Vampire Diaries just makes no sense…

  10. What is Nine doing, moving shows like this to PayTV is just asking to viewers to go their for them, or avoiding TV all together and just going elsewhere to keep in touch with these shows. Also for the shows GO! is holding on to (for now) why are they waiting to air them? I can’t remember the last time I watched GO! for any specific show, I used to watch it a lot when it first started.

Hart of Dixie – a fun show, worth it for fans of other CW shows like Life UneXpected or Gilmore Girls.

The Vampire Diaries – given Fox8 is showing it from the start we’ll have a wait for this one, damn you GO!

Shameless – hope it starts soon on Fox8.

  11. WTF??? GO! are on-selling The Vampire Diaries – surely this was one of their more popular shows… It does look like GO! and Nine are in a bit of trouble with cash flow and are just after the money

  12. Very surprised about vampire diaries, with such a large following people will be very disapoiinted! On the plus side least all the episodes will be played together!
