Grant Denyer hints at Sunrise exit

"I am certainly not going to sacrifice my lifestyle just for a breakfast television show," says Grant Denyer.

Grant Denyer has given an interview in which he talks about a future without Sunrise.

With Sunrise presenters currently in the midst of rumours, Denyer said with his contract coming up he was reassessing his career.

Sunrise, whilst being a fun show, is just a life-sucking experience. Whilst you get to see some of the great places of the country, it is at breakneck speed and it can’t be sustained,” he told the West Australian.

“There has to be some normality pretty soon. I am certainly not going to sacrifice my lifestyle just for a breakfast television show, it’s not worth it,” he said.

Denyer returned to Sunrise in January 2010 after four years away. Since that time he has become a father but he is keen to remain with Australia’s Got Talent. A full-time move to motor racing next year is also not out of the question.

“There is certainly enough demand and opportunity around for me to be able to do that, and that is why I am reassessing things,” he said. “Motor racing is an exciting and passionate part of my life; television is not everything to me.”

Of course contract renewal time is also the perfect time to talk about quitting a show to media…

Meanwhile, Weekend Sunrise weatherman, the very affable James Tobin, told me last week he just loves his job.

  1. People really took their nasty pills yesterday it seems. But let’s be fair. Grant Denyer doesn’t rely on an autocue or notes for Sunrise except to read the weather conditions for various cities. Everyone working in brekkie telly on any of the networks is there because of their ability to ad lib and be versatile.

  2. Is Grant Denyer still presenting the weather on Sunrise? I thought his baby was – she makes just as many appearances. You would think no-one had ever had a baby before!

  3. Grant used to be OK but I am so over him, his ego has got way too big for his small shoe size!!

As far as the other Sunrise team go, they are very ‘clicky’ & full of themselves!!

Sick & tired of their snotty nose comments & are very false, bring back Rachael Finch who on the other hand is a real trooper and is very down to earth. What you see is what you get & I love that about her, no bullcrap with her…….she’s a sweetheart!

Personally, it’s about time ch7 got rid of the dead wood & had a real good shake up with some new blood & genuine personalities!!

  4. Don’t watch insipid nonsense so don’t care whether he goes or not, but I’d be interested in seeing how he’d go if he could commit to a full season with the V8 Fujitsu serie. He was doing alright last time until his accident (driving a monster truck, not racing, which is actually safer than driving to the event).

  5. This is Sunrise right now:

    Kochie says a embarrassing comment/joke.
    Mel giggles uncontrollable.
Nat & Mark pretend to be dumber than they actually are to fit in.
    Grant makes a racist/homophobic/stupid comment.

The show needs a totally revamp staring with Grant going.

  6. Oh my goodness! He’s the ‘most annoying person’ on TV anyway. I’m still amazed that there are demographics that still tune in to his ‘staged dribble’. I wonder how well he’d perform without an autocue or idiot sheet? He’s an over-exposed has been, looking for a new contract me thinks.

  7. Presenting the weather details appears to be an afterthought on these shows, the camel racing, hula hoop performances etc etc seems to take priority. The cult of the personality pervades everything in media these days.

  8. I find Grant Denyer to be the most annoying person on TV. Sitting through one of his weather reports is a life-sucking experience on its own. Goodbye Grant, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

  9. Could Grant be considering leaving Sunrise due to being elbow-deep in a horse’s rectal passage live on national TV this morning?

  10. @newtaste – his sunrise job would be taxing constantly travelling and hardly ever home for a new dad it would be tough, I don’t think he was referring to anything other than that!!!

  11. I don’t see why they feel the need to have a traveling weather person anyway. I guess that guy that brought us the ‘Weather Tracker’ a few years ago wasn’t all that charismatic but still. I suspect they just do that segment every half hour to fill in time.

Let Grant go.. he’ll be back ..

  12. Rachael Finch was just annoying as a stand in. She had trouble speaking and it was painful to watch. I find James Tobin a bit like that too but he is on the improve.

  13. grant denyer leaves…. again. Nothing new there.

I really liked rachael finch as weathergirl! But I just get the feeling that the sunrise family dont really let in newbies too well. When tobin and finch were both fill-ins during the week there was a huge sense of insincerity coming from mel and kochie towards them. Maybe because tobin and finch are actually real people, not characters like the rest of the sunrise team.

I dont get the whole weatherperson role, I mean I would prefer to see someone from the weather channel giving the weather than some no name doing it.

  14. @ – I wouldn’t call motor racing a high risk activity, even with the recent run of high profile deaths in the sport. Fact is more people are killed rock fishing or by bees each year. Motor sport is probably safer than some of the things Grant has done as a weatherman on Sunrise.
