The latest edition of the Guinness Book of Records has named House as the most popular show on TV, watched by 81.8 million people in 66 countries. Which is kinda ironic given it’s on its last legs, so to speak, in the US and Australia.
It’s managed to topple CSI: Miami with its viewership of 73.8 million.
And Hugh Laurie has knocked David Hasselhoff off his perch as the most watched man. Seriously, what year is it? I know Baywatch has rerun longevity but that’s just ridiculous. Maybe everybody was referring to his doppleganger in Same Name?
Also think it’s very interesting that the most watched show stars an anti-hero, contradicting years of execs and producers wanting shows led by sympathetic characters. I guess it’s a testament to the writing and Mr. Laurie.
Any other contenders for shows and stars that should have made the short-list?

This is the most addicted character of world television, No doubt.
A mean, who else?
Dexter? Boring!
Hugh Laurie is simply one of the most talented actor nowadays, Period.
If I want to watch a Doctor, it is the exterrestrial alien Time-Lord from Gallifrey known as the Doctor from Doctor Who, the number 1 longest running sci-fi series in the world according to Guiness Book Of Records. 🙂
House is a sympathetic character. Character’s aren’t sympathetic when they claim to be something they’re not which is the case with most characters in Australian drama, especially the ‘nice’ ones.
I would have guessed The Simpsons
As a nurse I found House unbearable to watch. I just can’t stand his attitude, which portrays an outdated stereotype.
The depth of my dislike for this character is probably in direct proportion to Hugh Lauries skill in portraying him.
The “latest” Guinness Book of Records has dropped the ball, then. Top Gear UK is consistently rated as the most popular, most watched show in the world.
Just waiting for someone to claim that the NRL GF was still watched by more people, by making a case to include extra-terrestrial viewers in the numbers.
Never even had the urge to watch this show.
Top Gear UK has an audience of over 300 million. Source: Wikipedia.
House is on its last legs in the US coz Americans abandoned watching respectable shows which require the viewer to think a loooooonnnggg time ago. Talk about the decline of Western Civilisation.
Oh, and what about China? Considering that a certain show called Pop-Idol (or something like that) got audiences of 400 million back in 2007, I would expect there to be way larger audiences for shows in China than the 82 million House gets world-wide.
Does anyone know where 9 are getting CSI as the worlds most watched show in their promos?
I’m glad the gong goes to an decent series at least.
I was thinking maybe Bones or Castle, definitely Glee, all the safe shows…
I believe Desperate Housewives held this title several times during its early years
Yeah this does not make sense, it was only last year when it was announced Top Gear UK was watched by 350 million worldwide in over 100 countries.
Never watched a single episode. I like my characters to be likeable and have convincing accents.
yeah well it does make sense that an show quite a few seasons in would make it, because it takes a while for other non-english speaking countries to get stuff, and build up moumentum ect, i’d harzard a guess that NCIS was up there as well, but i wouldn’t say top gear, because i don’t think its really that big in many countries
The ‘ratings’ system continues to baffle me. How can they come up with accurate numbers when they don’t ask everybody? House hasn’t been watched in my house for at least 2 years, however I bet I’m the the demographic that gets classed as a ‘regular viewer’. Garbage.
Meanwhile in Australia it has struggled to crack 600k in the past twelve months, and the latest season has been banished to Friday nights
You’re kidding? That show is so boringly formula, predictable and ridiculous.
Ok in 2008 maybe i could understand, but not after last season of House.
Yes I thought Top Gear would have been up their must be in the top 10 though.
Can’t wait for the new season of House!
Well he wouldn’t even make my top 100, so I guess i’m the wrong person to ask.
Really? I thought it would of been U.K Top Gear or Glee. I would never of guessed House. At least not in 2011.
