Matthew Lloyd joins Nine’s AFL team

In the reshuffling of faces that is going on following TEN’s exit from AFL coverage, former Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd and TEN commentator has joined Nine’s AFL presenting team.

Lloyd, 33, will join Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw, Billy Brownless and Shane Crawford on the AFL Footy Show and will also be a regular panellist on The Sunday Footy Show.

Lloyd said: “I’m very happy to be joining Channel Nine. The Footy Show programs are established and dominate the footy landscape. I’m keen to add to the strength of these shows and continue my development as an analyst of the game working alongside Garry, James, Sam and the boys.”

GTV9’s Head of Content, Tim Cleary, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Matthew back to the network. Matthew has made the transition from AFL champion to media commentator quicker than most and his strong opinions and sharp insight into the game will complement our suite of footy shows.

“Even without the broadcast rights, Nine is the home to the two best experts in the game in Garry Lyon and Matthew Lloyd.”

Lloyd had also been a regular on The Game Plan and One Week at a Time for ONE, and the defunct Fox Footy’s White Line Fever.

  1. What is it with commcercial networks and hiring retired afl players as thier commentators, analyists and prestenters when they have no formal qualification or media expereince. Some people go through years of study and work hard in small community stations to help build thier expereince to have a crack at the big time only to be pushed aside by some himbo who has had every fed to him on a silver spoon ever since he was draft.

  2. Armchair Analyst

I dont understand this decision by Mathew Lloyd. I would have thought that he would be keen to go over to a network which actually will be covering the AFL for the next half a decade and its not Ten and its certainly not NIne. What could have swayed him surely not the prospecto of owrking on a show which has removed the AFL aspect from its show almost completely. I wouldnt be surprised if he gets picked up by Fox Sports.

  3. Of all the Ch10 rejects, Luke Darcy appeals as the most down to earth and knowledgeable without being a big head. Really hope he is picked up by Ch7.

  4. Suprised he wasn’t picked up by Seven or Fox. I think he’s really improved as a commentator. He’s got a good sense of humour so I think he’ll do well on the Footy Show.
