Pitcairn: Paradise Lost for Crime & Investigation

Quail Television will produce a docudrama set around the true life saga of sexual abuse on the island of Pitcairn.

Quail Television (At Home with Julia) will produce a docudrama for the Crime and Investigation Channel set around a true life saga set on the Polynesian island of Pitcairn.

Pitcairn is best known as being home to the descendants of the Bounty mutineers for 200 years. But in 1996 stories of ritualised sexual abuse emerged, involving nearly every island girl, often as children, by generations of mutineer descendants. In 2004, six men were convicted of the crimes.

Pitcairn: Paradise Lost will depict the trial that followed and the people involved, from the girls who dared speak out, to the island’s accused men, the island women who defended them, to the lawyers and journalists who investigated the story. It also reveals the legal twist that Pitcairn Island was never even part of Britain.

Foxtel’s Crime and Investigation Channel and TV3 in New Zealand have both joined the project as co-producers, as well as acquiring broadcast rights at pre-sale.

Greg Quail, Executive Producer and Founder at Quail Television said, “We are very pleased to partner with Foxtel and TV3, in what is a major step forward for the project as we continue development. Pitcairn: Paradise Lost has already attracted great interest from around the world and we are visiting the UK and MIPCOM this month to secure further co-production partners and pre-sales.”

Rick Kalowski, Executive Producer and Quail Television’s Creative Director – Scripted said, “We are working closely with the senior prosecutor who tried the case and the journalist/author, Kathy Marks, who knows it best, an A-list producing and writing team, as well as obtaining access to people from every side of the case”.

Pitcairn: Paradise Lost promises to present the first truly definitive account of this story, providing compelling viewing for audiences around the world”.”
