Renewed: Homeland

Good news for TEN with Showtime renewing its new drama Homeland for a second season.

Good news for TEN with Showtime renewing its new drama Homeland for a second season.

The cable series, based on the Israeli series Hatufim (Prisoners of War), has been renewed for another 12 episodes.

Starring Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin, it has attracted glowing reviews, with some declaring it the best new drama of the Fall season.

Homeland is just getting started,” said David Nevins, president of entertainment at Showtime.

“Clearly, the overall audience growth from week one to week four demonstrates that this show is hitting a nerve in the cultural zeitgeist. Alex (Gansa) and Howard (Gordon) have created a psychological thriller that holds special relevance in the post 9/11 world. I’m quite confident that its passionate audience will be riveted as the season unfolds and people discover where this story is going.”

The series already ranks as Showtime’s No. 1 debut drama, with 5.5 million viewers having viewed the first episode. It premiered to 1.08 million viewers.

It will air on TEN in 2012.

  1. It is going a bit too slow ,after 3 episodes .On Ten with ad breaks & the sex scenes cut out i doubt it will rate /survive. It is a good show but like many before it our FTA networks usually buy these shows & dump them quickly.

  2. “5.5 million viewers having viewed the first episode. It premiered to 1.08 million viewers.”

I would assume this includes catchup reruns and online viewers (ie Netflix).

Easily the best new show this season, awesome to hear it’s renewed.

  3. “5.5 million viewers having viewed the first episode. It premiered to 1.08 million viewers.”

Does anyone not make sense of that? Do you mean 5.5 million worldwide?

  4. “hitting a nerve in the cultural zeitgeist”? Counting they’re chicken a bit too early there. There are few shows that actually manage to do that. The Simpsons would be one for example.

  5. I’d definitely agree that it’s the best new show of the season. Glad to see it has been renewed.

I am very curious, though, what direction it will go in in its second season. The set up, though excellent, feels – at this stage – like it will only provide enough drama for one season.
