Seven News wins health media award

Seven News health reporter Karen O'Sullivan has been recognised for a story which highlighted cancer prevention and treatment.

Seven News health reporter Karen O’Sullivan has been awarded a Luminous Award for a story on a young girl with leukemia, which highlighted the importance of donating lifesaving resources such as bone marrow and platelets.

The Luminous Awards are awarded by the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia, and recognise stories on cancer prevention, research, treatment and patient support.

Just one award is given in the broadcast sector, with a second candidate given a High Commendation.

O’Sullivan also scored the High Commendation for her follow-up story to “Second Chance.”

John Stubbs, chair of the judging panel said, “Print and broadcast media carry a responsibility to provide cancer stories in the public interest that are accurate, informative, well researched, unbiased and ground breaking, particularly given cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia.”

Seven Melbourne’s News Director, Steve Carey, said of O’Sullivan’s win, “She has a flair for health stories, which she presents with compassion and detail. It’s always great to see a reward for solid journalism and effort.”
