Was Gruen Planet censored?

Update: Viewers were left wondering if Gruen was censored but ABC says it had a technical error.

Viewers of Gruen Planet last night were left wondering when a Test Pattern popped up in the middle of a conversation about the Royal Family.

On Twitter many were questioning whether it had been censored by the ABC.

Even the Gruen team weren’t too sure.

toddsampsonOz tweeted:
#gruen were we censored tonight or was it my tv? It was right at the point we compared the royal family to the kardashian family. Mmmm?

Wil_Anderson tweeted:
Hmmm… I’m at dinner but I’m getting a lot of messages about Gruen getting censored. Are Mexican gangs after me? #duck

But the show appeared to air uninterrupted 3 hours later in Perth, which suggests the glitch wasn’t part of any wider conspiracy.

Media Hub problems perhaps?

Update: An ABC spokesperson tells TV Tonight, “It was a technical error from ABC master control.”

  1. I was a bit surpised at the time when a saw the test pattern which seemingly bleeped out what Will was saying i didnt think about it too much but considering he was comaring the Royal family to the Kardashians i am not surprised at what transpired. Was still a good show loved it as ussual.

  2. I love how conspiracy theorists like to make emphatic statements about things of which they apparently know so little. Of course Perth’s broadcast wasn’t “censored” because the Queen isn’t staying in Perth. She isn’t staying in Sydney or Brisbane either but they still had glitches.

The problems experienced in Perth were just more of what we’ve suffered on and off from MediaHub since it was turned on. In addition to the major issues at the start of the program detailed by JamesJ, there were further interruptions to the data stream which caused freeze frames and those really loud chirps that you get. The version on iView appears to be unaffected. So much for the supposed censoring.

I’m pretty confident that when the ABC does censor something, they are up front about it, like they were a few years ago when they censored the anti-fat discrimination ad during The Pitch segment.

  3. On ABC iview, they’ve posted the “uncensored” version and all Wil says is “A lot has changed since 1954, you don’t count these days unless you have your own TV show.” In Brisbane, the ABC test pattern came up after Wil said “1954” and only lasted three seconds, so it appears to have been a glitch.

  4. @Anonymous Coward – You obviously haven’t been watching much ABC or WIN channels played out by MediaHub. A “glitch” is usually someone with finger trouble pressing a wrong button, together with the fact that no one actually watches what is being broadcast these days. No, the Queen is in Canberra – the point being…?
Guess we’ll have to watch ABC2 9:30 tonight to see what’s what.

  5. The test pattern appeared briefly when it aired here in Brisbane. Usually when they censored something it’s a bleep, so it probably was a technical hitch. Would be interesting to know if it happens during the encore screening tonight on ABC2.

  6. The Queen wasn’t staying in Perth. A test pattern doesn’t just ‘pop’ up due to a glitch these days, it more like we see 30 minutes on pause zoomed onto Wil Anderson’s armpit. This was censorship which may or may not have been rogue.

  7. Gruen had issues at the start of the show here in Perth — The first frame was shown for 10s or so then they had a ‘sorry for the interruption in service’ for ~5s then the audio started playing and the video went back eventually.
