Cameras roll on more Offspring

Southern Star Producer John Edwards is keeping up the pace on multiple drama projects for TEN, Nine and Foxtel.

Offspring‘s third season begins filming in Melbourne today.

With Rush not renewed the show is now TEN’s only returning drama series.

Both seasons of the Asher Keddie drama have so far have consisted of 13 episodes.

Southern Star Producer John Edwards is keeping his his frenetic pace with Beaconsfield already in the can for Nine and Tangle‘s third season finished filming for Foxtel.

The script for The Pajama Game: World Series Cricket script was delivered to Nine on Friday and Puberty Blues is in development for TEN.

“We’re trying to get the next generation of shows happening,” Edwards told TV Tonight.

“Trying to get a Rush replacement, really. That’s really what my focus is.”

Last week the format rights to Spirited were also sold in the US, but he cautioned that there is a long way to go before it becomes a reality.

  1. I love Offspring, I feel I can relate to Nina and I know many people who feel exactly the same way. I believe that is why people watch and enjoy the show. Zack just because you may dislike a show does not make it crap.

  2. who wants to watch this crap, the same storylines over and over again directly ripped off us and uk series. Axe this mindfart and renew a quality show like Rush!

  3. Yeah what Kylie said, why replace Rush? Just bring Rush back.

I’m guessing Offspring will have one more year after next. I doubt we’ll ever see an Australian show go past 4 seasons. Rafters being the exception.

  4. I’m probably not in the right demographic (women under 40) but I was really starting to love offspring. S2 got the balance right of neuroticism, comedy and genuine drama, but 13 episodes aren’t enough! And when 10 burned some off in double episodes it makes it feel shorter.

I don’t get the hate for John Edwards – he has brought some of the most creative and memorable Aussie shows to our screens. Some of the very few Aussie shows that I’d watch again on DVD/rerun.

I don’t want to hate on other hard working productions but if popularity meant PTTR/W&L was the acme of drama I would have given up on Australian drama long long ago.

  5. I agree with Howie. This guy is not the only Australian producer…why do they keep going back to him all the time?

It’d be nice to see the networks take a gamble on a project from someone else. Anyone else.

  6. @Howie, bit harsh. Well they do very much appeal to the key advertising demographic of 16-39/49, so one would argue he should get a few more commissions.

You also can’t deny the quality of his shows which on average are up there with the best our local industry has produced (Love My Way, Tangle, Paper Giants, Police Rescue etc).

  7. We desperately need more Australian content on all the tv channels.. why don’t they ax all those old programs from the fifties and sixties..So many of our local shows have disappeared this year and we need more to take their place…

  8. I’m sorry to say but there really needs to be some other drama producers in this country. The ratings of this guy’s shows indicate that they do not appeal to the mass public. Hopefully some other independent producers can start getting on board and stop the mess this guy is creating with Australian drama.

  9. Probably a silly question but if TEN order more than their usual 13 episodes for a season.. would those extra episodes count for more local content points?

Or if they aired 2 seasons in same year?
