ABC1 has confirmed to TV Tonight that it will air the 2011 Doctor Who Christmas special on Boxing Day.
This matches the turn-around of the 2010 Christmas special, which improved on the 2009 special airing a month after its UK premiere.
A sneak preview will air overnight in the UK as part of the 2011 Children in Need event. Starring Matt Smith, Claire Skinner, Bill Bailey, Arabella Weir and Alexander Armstrong, the special sees the Doctor “in war-torn England embarking on a magical and mysterious adventure with a young widow and her two children.”
Who fans are also in for another treat with ABC2 set to screen every episode of the rebooted series at 7:30pm weeknights, beginning in January.
This will see the series begin with Christopher Eccleston’s first appearance as the Doctor, running every episode release in order from then, including Christmas specials.

God Bless ya Aunty
Wow, I can’t believe I missed the ABC2 bit in the news story. I’m happy about this. Every Doctor Who episode in January. I hope it starts in non-ratings then we won’t have to wait as long.
Not much of a surprise lol but nice to know they are at least screening this ep “The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe” within hours of the rest of the world.
Fantastic! (Come on, you know someone was going to say it eventually.)
Happy about ABC2 screening every episode from the start. I’ve only been watching since Matt Smith started so this will be a chance to catch up.
ABC and Fox Sports HD are the only channels worth watching.
Fantastic news. Who wants to watch a Christmas episode long after Christmas has passed? Noone!
@Doc Who Fan you can catch the Tom Baker years on the Scifi Chn Through Foxtel and Austar (Chn 125 and 165 2hrs later)
Good old aunty.
I’ll have to keep an eye on those reruns, I’ve missed one of the specials somewhere so will have to catch it.
@ Doc Who Fan
I loved it when they did it for the fortieth anniversary from 2003-2005 and I’ll note it was the first time they played a lot of the first two Doctors serials in my lifetime. Except for the second Doctor’s (I think ) The Tomb of the Cybermen (I know I saw it on video in the nineties when they found it plus others not mentioned here rather than TV ) , The Mind Robber and The Krotons. I hope they can do it again for the fiftieth if they can get the rights for the classics. I’d also love it if it took years to play eg. 2013-2015 or 2016 . Just one episode a day from Mon-Thurs or Fri at ~5.30pm or 6pm would be wonderful.
Good news about xmas episode. I just watching reboot series on DVD, I’m up to last two episodes of series 4, as a true who fan I be watching ABC2 also.
Be great for the 50th year if the ABC did show classic who incling the what left of the lost episodes.
awesome!
Love Doc Who.
hoped ABC would repeat the entire Classic Doc Who again tho… Will they ever?
Geronimo!
Thanks ABC2, great Jan viewing – Eccleston and Billie, just what the Doctor ordered
Thank you ABC
Thank you David and especially to the ABC! 🙂
Wow, this is awesome! My favourite episodes are the School Reunion when the Doctor meets up with Sarah Jane for the first time since they last parted and the episode when Rose “dies”. I’ve been watching Doctor Who since I was a little boy and never thought I’d get teary-eyed watching it.
Thanks for that David, this will make a lot of DocWho fans very happy, and the news ABC2 will re-run the series, just a nice bonus. Screw the news and anything else on at 7:30.
Now wheres this Sneak Peek?
It did well last year so why shouldn’t they fasttrack it?
