Finale week is full of highlights

Finales, winners, premieres and farewells -the last week of ratings has it all.

It’s the final week of ratings for 2011.

Enjoy the first-run shows while they last because next week it will be slim pickings (or at least time to explore multichannels and DVDs).

This week marks the final appearance for several shows: Wild Boys, Postcards SA (both wrap today) and Friday is tipped to be the last edition of Kerri-Anne. From there it goes into summer re-runs before its new format -likely to be Mornings with Sonia Kruger and possibly Andrew Daddo.

Of course the big finale this week is ABC’s beloved Spicks and Specks, which ends with a star-studded one hour finale on Wednesday night. Don’t miss it.

Next week we would expect Good News World to take its exit.

Tomorrow night we have the final of Celebrity Apprentice, which Nine has turned into a hit series, expect word of a renewal by mid-week. It goes head to head with the showdown of The X Factor‘s final three, complete with Kylie performing. The winner announcement is on Tuesday night followed by the premiere of Happy Endings.

Monday also brings our first and only look at Kyle and Jackie O’s Night with the Stars, which was recorded in LA late last week. Seven will be looking at its critical and audience reception before any rash decisions on ordering more.

On Wednesday night it’s the Junior MasterChef finale. The show hasn’t lived up to audience expectations because the overall brand has suffered. But it has still been handsomely produced, and the dishes these kids whip up is staggering. Last week it was awarded at the SPAA Conference Awards in Light Entertainment.

The Slap‘s finale on Thursday night is a kicker. It focusses on Richie (Blake Davis) and there are some explosive scenes as he deals the final cards. It goes head to head with the premiere of SBS ONE’s intriguing series the family where you will meet The Cardamones, who were filmed 24/7 in their own home. This is a show where you will engage with real people, who have the same warmth, problems and humour as the rest of us. I’d recommend you PVR both these shows….

Beauty and the Geek Australia also ends on Thursday night on Seven.

And is there anything more twisted than this week’s episode of American Horror Story on ELEVEN? Zachary Quinto guest stars, and once again it is far from perfect but bursting with startling plot moves. Step back as Jessica Lange lets rip at her daughter,  “Addie”. This is Part 1 of a double Halloween episode.

ABC1 also premieres Who’s Been Sleeping in My House? and The Hour on Monday and The IF Awards airs on SBS on Wednesday.

On Saturday Australia’s Funniest Home Videos gives away a whopping $250,000 -more money than Celebrity Apprentice, X Factor and Junior MasterChef finales combined. Don’t dream of being a singer or chef -just go and make a whacky 30 second video in your backyard.

There’s lots to watch this week.

Good luck fitting it all in!

  1. Hey David, I know you don’t regard it as spoiling after it’s aired, but any chance your ‘X and Y win BATG’ post could avoid giving it away on the homepage? I haven’t even started watching this season yet (and it might be good practice with other shows too, though I don’t watch any other reality).

    1. Jack I write about TV news. But what you’re asking is that my site avoids writing a headline while other newspapers go right ahead and file it. It’s a big week of finales and they all require attention.

  2. @ Zambora, you speak of the Kyle & Jackie O show as though you have already seen it. I’ll wait until i’ve seen it before I go making such a definitive judgement 🙂

  3. Spicks ‘n Specks will be missed.
Thanks goodness ABC & SBS still value folks over summer.

Kyle and Jackie O – a lowlight and one to be avoided at all cost.

  4. @zac The only reason Good News World exists is because it qualifies Channel Ten for Australian drama points by being scripted sketch – so there’s not much chance of bringing Good News Week back.

  5. I don’t know if I’m cynical, old, out-of-touch with reality or what-not, but apart from Spicks and Specks there is nothing there that gives me a care factor above 0.1%…
