Nine wins Live Sports award

Nine has won an international award for their sports coverage of the State of Origin.

They were blasted by viewers for their erratic coverage of the Rugby World Cup, but last week Nine won an international award for their sports coverage of the State of Origin.

Nine won the “Best Live Sports Coverage” award at the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) media excellence awards in London for their 2010 broadcast of State of Origin.

It was the year in which Nine had its world-first sporting event broadcast live in 3D on free-to-air television.

The AIB commended Nine’s “winning formula, extensive close-up and wide shots without disruption allowed viewers to experience the game’s intensity seamlessly.”

In more good news, Sir David Attenborough was named International TV personality for his “special way of connecting with his audience and has led innovation in TV production over the last half century.”

Little did they know he even moves like Jagger.

  1. @Zambora: the nominees for Best coverage of a sports event were (according to the AIB website):
Nine Network, Australia – 2010 State of Origin – NSW v QLD Game 1
Russian Travel Guide TV, Russia – Khanty-Mansiysk World Chess Olympiad
BBC Birmingham, UK – Stoke City in the FA Cup Final
Eurosport, France – IRC SimulCam Coverage
NDTV, India – The World Cup of Joy
Sony Professional & Others, UK – Wimbledon in 3D

  2. Remember this was for 2010 when you could actually watch it on a modern TV. It regressed in 2011 to standard def, next year I’m expecting it in black and white and by 2013 we’ll probably be waiting for a telegram from channel nine to tell us who won.

  3. Seriously ?
As others have said – who were other nominees ?

I can think of Formula1 grnd prix, motgp, swimming, gridiron all have better coverage

Sorry Kaylen, I am still laughing.

  4. How can an intrenational award be given for a game played in oz and beamed to a few countries and as it was the HD veriesion even Australians did not see it.Who was the competition or they win by default.

  5. 2010 was great. HD and 3D.

2011 was an absolute disgrace. Hopefully kerry stokes is right, nine has run out of money and won’t have enough to bid for the NRL and it goes to Ten/One/Fox Sports.

  6. Seriously? Nine won? Wow the other nominees must have been bad for that to happen. Mind you credit is due to the people behind the scenes here as it takes a mountain to do this but the people you see on screen no i don’t give credit to Mr Keno and Mr Sportsbet.

  7. I was going to ask if they then had it taken off them for their appalling coverage of the World Cup.

    I guess not.

I suppose when they have nothing negative to say about Pokie reforms they can’t bother to provide descent coverage.

  8. What is the point when the event was an event only played in Australia, If it was for something more international then the award would mean something, but this doesnt mean anything. i can see Nine’s sports coverage getting worsee not better if the massive debts are taken into acount. You cannot cover sports rights well on a shoe string budget, well maybe if your SBS you can but still thats a rare exception.

  9. They won a live sports award for state of origin? Well it was delayed here in Adelaide. Nine are the worst at sport, especially rugby league, so this award is meaningless.

  10. Good to hear – Nine really does do a professional job with the league, and sometimes we take it a bit for granted. The camera and editing crews are excellent and the presentation is pretty slick. The core 3 commentators of Warren, Sterling and Gould generally do a great job at getting you into the game (except when Rabbits is talking about pokies, or Gould is ranting about referees). The only weak part of their coverage is the hangers on like Brad Fittler.

  11. A well deserved award for 9 and the Rugby League State Of Origin series, it has been the best and most consistent sporting event on tv for decades, it is an iconic part of the sport calendar with huge global appeal.

Can’t help but think 9 should have to make a public apology for the Rugby World Cup coverage though.
