2011: In Memoriam

In 2011 we said goodbye to talented actors, writers, directors, producers, presenters, performers, executives, critics and crew.

In 2011 we said goodbye to talented actors, writers, directors, producers, presenters, performers, executives, critics and crew.

Some of them like Andy Whitfield, Jay Dee Springbett, Sarah Watt and Blair Milan died far too young.

Others such as Paul Lockyer and his ABC colleagues died in tragic circumstances while working on the job. The death of quiet achievers such as cinematographer John ‘Brolga’ Bowring also rocked the industry. The loss of Bill Hunter was felt across the country….

Cancer took too many: Harold Hopkins, Denise Morgan, Ian Carroll, Michelle Fawdon to name a few.

The death of Jon Blake reminded us of a career never fully realised and a devoted son who cared for him for years.

We also bid farewell to many veterans, Googie Withers, Diane Cilento, Reg Whiteman, Bob Davis, Godfrey Phillipp, Frank Whitten, Robin Oliver. And then there were the international names, some of whom were more aligned with film than television, but who touched us all, including Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Falk, Elisabeth Sladen, Harry Morgan, Cliff Robertson and more.

  1. I didn’t realise Peter Gwynne had died. I remember him on Return To Eden. Problem was I would see him back then and think “wow, how good were those make-up people to make him look like Herman Munster back in the old days, not even a remote resemblance…” And then years later I realised Herman Munster was Fred Gwynne, not Peter. I was never the smartest.

A few additions to the list: James Elliott (actor, Number 96), Ray Taylor (host of Australia’s first Today show in the 1950s and later a talk-show host at ATV0 in Melbourne. Also worked as a writer on a number of US shows in the ’70s), Noel Stanaway (long-time weather presenter in Queensland at BTQ7, TVQ10 and 7QLD) and David Jull (first person to appear on TVQ0 and continued in on-screen and management roles for over a decade before going into federal politics).

    1. Thanks Andrew. Yes I was remiss in filing Peter Gwynne which is doubly annoying given he appeared in a radio play I wrote. Thanks for the extra names. This will help because Logies now consults with me when they are preparing their annual list.

  2. It was tough being a Doctor Who fan this year losing two amazing ambassadors for the show in Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen, and a great guest actor in Michael Gough, played one of the best 60’s villain and a treacherous Time Lord in the 80s.

  3. Even now months after her death – seeing pictures of Elisabeth Sladen makes me feel really sad. 🙁

I wish Liz was still with us!

I hope all the people listed in this article found peace.
