Aussie flicks and Drama points
If you are a fan of Australian movies then keep your eye on Nine over summer -they're worth valuable Drama points.

If you are a fan of Australian movies, including some of the more obscure Aussie movies, then keep your eye on Nine’s Saturday nights across summer.
Tonight it screens the 2008 thriller The Square, starring Joel Edgerton, David Roberts, Lucy Bell and Anthony Hayes.
Next week it has the 2008 film Acolytes, also starring Joel Edgerton.
Nine has been playing Aussie flicks on Saturday nights in summer for several years now. Because the films are first-run in primetime, they are worth Drama content points.
The quota system rules that such Dramas (either series or films) must run between 5-11pm, but it doesn’t insist they must be screened in the ratings season.

Tim, that sounds like Mercury. Basically holding up a mirror to Kennet’s Victoria. I think Geoffery Rush was the lead.
I saw the Square on its initial theatrical release, very dark on TV, good to revisiut again along with Clare Van ….. What other show on ABC was David Roberts in, he played the editor of a newspaper ?????
I think this actor Joel Edgerton is overrated…..bigtime….
@MuchoTB, glad you enjoyed it. Acolytes is an interesting low budget film too, kinda Aussie goth.
Wake In Fright ay? Well that would be the second time it’s been aired on Australian television, the other would be the infamous 80s VHS youtube version which for a good 30 years was the only known version of the film in existence. That is until they discovered the original prints in a box marked ‘for destruction’ in the USA. Hence the cinematic re-release, dvd, restoration and now airing on ABC.
Thanks for pointing this out David, would not have caught it otherwise. Good film albeit a bit hard to follow with the breaks and darkness.
Thanks for the recommendation Ellaboo – for the first time in a long time I had a Saturday night in, and watched The Square. I really enjoyed it!
I’ll probably watch Acolytes or at least tape it next week…the plot looks interesting!
Nine historically play quite a bit of obscure Australian cinema in this period. I hope it continues.
abc2 are showing aussie films from next friday night, dogs in space(09/12), following week, Wake in Fright(16/12),both great films.
I agree with your second sentence, Tmorgan, but not your first.
Shame they don’t get given a chance in ratings periods too.
The Square is a very good little thriller. Worth a look.
@tmorgan I remember the Castle being played at least twice this year (though possibly on digital channels)
sbs do to have Australian movies on satday at 10.00
Can a network please play the Castle sometime over summer? We need more Aussie films on TV.
