Before the Game may stay on TEN

Speculation is getting stronger that TEN will keep Before the Game despite having no AFL rights.

TEN may have moved on from broadcasting the AFL but panel show Before the Game could remain.

There’s still no confirmation on the future of the Roving Enterprises show, which has strong appeal amongst AFL fans, but there have been continued rumours Seven was looking to snaffle it.

Seven’s run of primetime AFL shows have struggled, including The Bounce, Four Quarters, Live and Kicking, The Game and an evening edition of AFL Game Day.

With Roving’s strong links to TEN, including with Producer Craig Campbell and panelist Dave Hughes both tied to The Project, a switcheroo would make for interesting times…

Today the Herald Sun reports TEN will “do a Footy Show“, keeping the show despite no AFL broadcasting rights, with a slight revamp.

Last year’s panel included Dave Hughes, Samantha Lane, Mick Molloy, Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann, Ryan Fitzgerald and Andrew Maher.

Andew Maher has already joined FOX Sports FC.

A TEN spokeswoman declined to confirm if Before the Game would return in 2012, but said: “It’s looking very positive.”

TEN’s Saturday line-up in 2012 will also include The Graham Norton Show.

  1. Really important ten has some afl based show. There is a huge afl audience out there they can market. Very important given the amount of viewers ten has lost during 2011. But it should not be a Saturday night show sandwiched between afl telecasts on seven. It should be a thursday or friday preview show or Monday night wrap up the round show. With Monday night preferred

  3. It’s a great idea to keep it.

It will make viewers switch back from Seven and with the commercials TEN will in fact make a profit from the AFL without having to pay to screen it.

  4. So we can expect TGNS to be all over the place time wise if it is shown on Saturday night……why not leave it on Thursday at 9.30 where current viewers are used to watching it on ABC2.

  5. Ten would be mad to give it up. It’s brilliant, they’ve got a great mix working there. As a female viewer I do find the Sunday shows verge into too much of an old boys’ reunion with regular panellists trying to show off their ancient wisdom. I think BTG does a much better job of interacting with the player guests.

  6. Why wouldn’t Ten keep it. They do not need to have AFL rights to do a footy show. Look at the Footy Show on Nine. If it goes to Seven they really do need Dave Hughes. He is a star.

  7. Ignore my comment about BTG in the Axed article, didn’t see this story.

Will be hard for Ten to keep it and in the same timeslot because you need to schedule it around the match on Seven which could change each week. They might be better off moving the show to a weeknight.

Seven will no doubt try a new footy show next year to be hosted by, yep you guessed it Hamish McLachlan.

  8. I believe One will keep showing The Game Plan on Thursdays too (both NRL and AFL versions). They have been doing the NRL version even though they don’t have any telly rights.

  9. A tip for channel 7: don’t even bother developing your own entertainment based football show because we all know it would be good it would last about four weeks. Instead, save the money and use it to pension off Bruce McAvaney and your AFL coverage will instantly improve no end.
