Council rejects Block garage permits

The City of Port Phillip has rejected a planning permit to build four garages at The Block on heritage grounds.

The City of Port Phillip has rejected a planning permit to build four garages at The Block on heritage grounds.

The South Melbourne properties, currently undergoing renovation for the 2012 series, are the oldest yet to be tackled by the Nine reality series. With modern extensions to the old buildings the remaining land-size is modest, but well placed to the city, the beach and South Melbourne market.

Producers had hoped to utilise a property at the rear that it purchased as four garage spaces, but the council has rejected that plan arguing that the house contributed to the heritage of Montague St.

“We understand off-street parking would add a considerable amount to the value of a home in South Melbourne, but four garages would not have fitted into the streetscape,” Port Phillip councillor Frank O’Connor said.

The house at the rear of The Block has already been turned into a site production office and houses a small sponsor supplies shop for the contestants to use.

  1. Wow, Mitre10 didn’t get sponsership rights for the new season of “The Block”, but Bunnings did?.

Didn’t they months ago try to get approval to have a 3rd level added to each townhouse, & now they trying to get a garage for each of the 4 homes.

I know I’m not familiar with homes in VIC & NSW areas, but mostly all inner city townhouses don’t have garages, but have to pay for fixed parking oustside their own homes?.
