First Tuesday Book Club: Dec 6

It's the last episode for the year and time to talk summer reading.

It’s the last episode of First Tuesday Book Club with Jennifer Byrne for the year and time to talk summer reading in a one hour special.

Special guests are Chair of Sydney Writers’ Festival, Sandra Yates, and John Birmingham, the blogger and bestselling Australian author of He Died With A Felafel in his Hand.

First up for discussion is How I Became A Famous Novelist by Steve Hely, a book that has been described as a ‘razor-sharp evisceration of celebrity culture and literary fame’. Young readers let us know what is hot on their book list this year before the clubbers turn their attention to what books they’re planning to take on their summer holidays and great gift ideas, before tackling the question – what was the best fiction book of the year?

10pm Tuesday on ABC1.

  1. Thankyou so much to Janet for the title of Gilgamesh, I too rushed to write it down but did a very bad job of the spelling. My local ABC shop were as helpful as they could be but now I have all I need for them to help me.

  2. I also just read The Book Thief and found it hard to get into for the first 100 pages or so, due to the very unique style and way of telling the story, but from about a third of the way in I was hooked. I cried a lot in the last section, only about 3rd book to do so.

  3. Hi Sylvia – I can’t speak for the First Tuesday panel but I have read The Book Thief. I was so envious of Zusak’s beautiful writing and ability to make such a unique point of view work (it’s the only book I’ve read that has used the point of view of death!) I too found tears streaming down my face as I read the last few pages.

If you want to discuss the book more with people that have read it, I would suggest that you try writing a comment on the First Tuesday Book Club forum on their website – if you haven’t already done so, of course 🙂

  4. I would like to get the title of Jennifer’s book she read I wasn’t quick enought to write it down before she finished. It was about a pregnant girl who became a single mum and her story could have been in war time not sure the authors name was in big letter s at the top of the book in silver or gold sorry that is all I can remember hoping you can let me know the title. thank You.

  5. Has anyone on the panel read “The Book Thief”? by Marcus Zusak? being an avid reader, I read the first 2 pages, and thought, this is not for me!!! Then picked it up again, as I was reduced to reading the telephone directory!!!! and was hooked. So moving that I cried at the end. (I am 78 years old, and have been reading since the age of 6.) Having lived thru the war in London, this gave me a very different view of the war seen thru the eyes of a remarkable family in Germany. Please can I have a comment from someone???
