‘Joe Scully’ gets a gig on Killing Time

Actor Shane Connor sued Grundys in 2005 and won -but FremantleMedia puts it in the past and delivers on screen.

One actor I sure didn’t expect to see turning up in TV1’s Killing Time miniseries was Shane Connor.

The series is produced by FremantleMedia Australia, formerly known as Grundy Television, which was sued by Connor after he was sacked as “Joe Scully” on Neighbours in 2003.

The 2005 case that followed was particularly ugly, casting behind-the-scenes dramas into the public spotlight, belying the squeaky-clean image of the family-friendly show.

Connor won a wrongful dismissal case and was awarded $230,000. He then worked overseas following the publicity, and later appeared in ABC’s Dirt Game miniseries.

Last week Connor showed up in Killing Time playing a detective looking to bring down lawyer Andrew Fraser (David Wenham). And it was a very good, restrained performance.

Presumably this now means everyone has moved on. While many Grundys faces are no longer at the top of Freo, some who were involved in the miniseries still remember the trial.

That said, the TV1 series has been a strong production, and as one who hasn’t warmed to Fraser’s recent television ventures -notably a dreadful Sunday Night story- the acting, writing and direction in this tale have brought me back each week.

It’s also featured the final performances by the late Michelle Fawdon.

Tonight sees the final instalment, including episodes that jeopardised the series broadcast via the Victorian courts.

Meanwhile actor Richard Cawthorne is nominated for an AACTA Award next month -and deserves to win.

Killing Time wraps with a double episode 8:30pm Wednesday on TV1.

  1. I’d love to see the whole Scully family return to Ramsay Street – Lyn, Joe, Steph, Flick, Michelle and Jack. I know it’ll never happen, but I can always hope… 2002-2004 was the best era of Neighbours in my opinion, with the Kennedy’s and the Scully’s at the heart of the show.

  2. I was just saying to my partner the other day that the face looked familiar (a bit older maybe). Sad to see the mini series end its been great too watch.
