Rumour: New SBS Director of Television?

A Pay TV exec is tipped to be appointed as the new Director of Television for SBS.

TV Tonight hears whispers that Tony Iffland, General Manager, BBC Worldwide Australia is tipped to become the new Director of Television for SBS.

The position has been vacant since the mid-year exit of Matt Campbell, who joined Shine Australia.

Iffland was appointed General Manager of BBC Worldwide Australia in July 2009 following on as Chief Executive of UKTV since 1995.

Prior to joining UKTV, Iffland worked for over 14 years collectively with BBC Worldwide’s Australian office, including three years in the UK working on the launch of UK Gold, one of BBC Worldwide’s joint-venture channels with Virgin Media.

He has also been Vice President of the board of Pay TV industry group ASTRA.

Should the appointment be realised in the new year, Iffland would be a good get for SBS and would be the second BBC exec to join a public broadcaster. Last year Brendan Dahill, formerly Director of Television for BBC Worldwide Channels, Australasia, was appointed as ABC1’s Channel Controller.
