Veteran actor Carl Bleazby, best known for his role as Col. Jim Emerson in ABC's Bellbird, died yesterday aged 95.

Veteran actor Carl Bleazby, best known for his role as Col. Jim Emerson in ABC’s Bellbird, has died, aged 95.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday at Lourdes Nursing Home in Killara where he has been living since 2010.

Bleazby played the crusty farmer on the landmark soap across ten years, from 1967-1977 but has made numerous appearances in Australian television, especially for Crawford Productions.

He appeared in Consider Your Verdict, Hunter, Division 4, Homicide, Ryan, Matlock Police, Power Without Glory, Skyways, Sons and Daughters and The Flying Doctors. On Prisoner he played Major Ferguson, father of Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson (Maggie Kirkpatrick).

His final role was in 1990 on Home and Away.

With a background in radio, Bleazby was one of the first of Melbourne’s radio men to enlist on the outbreak of war in 1939. Joining up as a private, he was demobilised in 1945, with the rank of captain and returned to announcing at 3XY. In Palestine he worked as an A.I.F. Radio Reporter, broadcasting from Jerusalem Radio for eight months.

He also appeared in numerous stage productions, including for J.C. Williamsons as well as film.
