69th Golden Globe Awards: winners

The wins go to Homeland, Downton Abbey, Modern Family, Laura Dern, Kelsey Grammer, Matt Le Blanc, Claire Danes -and Ricky drops the F bomb.

“The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. Bit louder, bit trashier, bit drunker, and more easily bought — allegedly.”

Ricky Gervais has already let fly with his first barbs at the the 69th Golden Globe Awards.

The annual gongs from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are underway at the Beverly Hills Hilton as of 12 midday AEDT.

The Golden Globes are just like the Oscars...without all that esteem,” he said.

Gervais said he was given instructions by the HFPA: No profanity, no nudity, no smut or innudeno, not to libel anyone and not to mention Mel Gibson this year.

Instead he made reference to Jodie Foster’s beaver and several digs about the HFPA.

“They’re a non-profit organisation, just like NBC.”

Winners in bold:

BEST ACTRESS, TV COMEDY
Laura Dern (Enlightened)
Zooey Deschanel (New Girl)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Laura Linney (The Big C)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)

The show premiered on Showcase last night. She thanks, “all the whistleblowers out there — bless you, (my character) couldn’t exist without you!”

BEST MINI-SERIES OR TV MOVIE
Cinema Verite
Downton Abbey
The Hour
Mildred Pierce
Too Big to Fail

Julian Fellowes rightly thanks the audience.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Romola Garai (The Hour)
Diane Lane (Cinema Verite)
Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey)
Emily Watson (Appropriate Adult)
Kate Winslet (Mildred Pierce)

A shoo-in to win. She was a knockout in this show that not enough people saw.

Ricky returns and tells recipients, “Just do the main two. Your agent and God,” he said. “I know that both God and my agent had exactly the same amount of input in my career.” He’s an atheist.

BEST ACTOR, TV DRAMA
Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire)
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
Kelsey Grammer (Boss)
Jeremy Irons (The Borgias)
Damian Lewis (Homeland)

Wow. Surprising to beat Buscemi and Cranston. When is Australia getting this show please? “This is very nice,” he observes, before thanking Chris Albrecht’s money and balls.

BEST DRAMA SERIES, TV
American Horror Story
Boardwalk Empire
Boss
Game of Thrones
Homeland

Good news for TEN. Perfect timing for Sunday’s premiere.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey)
Idris Elba (Luther)
William Hurt (Too Big To Fail)
Bill Nighy (Page Eight)
Dominic West (The Hour)

“This is for the fans, most loyal fans in the world,” he says before thanking BBC and BBC America. “We did it mama, cheers.”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, TV SERIES, MINI-SERIES or MOVIE
Peter Dinklange (Game of Thrones)
Paul Giamatti (Too Big to Fail)
Guy Pearce (Mildred Pierce)
Tim Robbins (Cinema Verite)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)

Dinklage beats our Guy.

Dinklage’s mother told him, “Have you seen Mildred Pierce? Guy Pearce is going to win.”

Ricky is back. “It’s going well isn’t it? You’re so much better than last year’s audience. They had a right stick up their a*se.”

Hubby and wife team Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy sing their introduction to the next award. Cute.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, TV SERIES, MINI-SERIES or MOVIE
Jessica Lange (American Horror Story)
Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire)
Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)
Sofia Vegara (Modern Family)
Evan Rachel Wood (Mildred Pierce)

Was there ever any doubt!!

Lange thanks FX, her co-stars, crew “but more than anything I want to thank the writers. I find it rarer every year to find a piece of work that is really beautifully written and gives you something to do. And it certainly was this.”

BEST ACTRESS, TV DRAMA
Claire Danes (Homeland)
Mireille Enos (The Killing)
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Madeleine Stowe (Revenge)
Callie Thorne (Necessary Roughness)

Tough category there. Danes thanks her parents, husband Hugh Dancy, the creative team and cast of Homeland. “This is a huge, huge honour, thankyou.” I’m thinking the HFPA like a show that started in Israel before being adapted for the US, but she’s a deserving winner.

BEST ACTOR, TV COMEDY
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
David Duchovny (Californication)
Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory)
Thomas Jane (Hung)
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)

“It’s been an awesome experience,” says Matt Le Blanc for playing himself. Go figure…. “Let’s be honest, he’s way more fun and interesting than the real thing. I wish I was him?”

Ok can we please have the show now, Nine?

Sidney Poitier gets a standing ovation as he honours Morgan Freeman with the Cecil B. de Mille Lifetime Achievement award.

Morgan now gets his own after a fab montage of movies.

“My passion in life has always been acting,” he said.

“My deep thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press for this award.”

BEST COMEDY SERIES, TV
Enlightened
Episodes
Glee
Modern Family
New Girl

Sofia Vergara thanked everyone in Espanol. Sorry I can’t transcribe….

That was the final TV winner, folks. Did you agree with their picks?

Oh wait. Ricky drops the F-bomb when introducing presenters Antonio Banderas and Selma Hayek.

“They’re extremely talented and probably very interesting. I’m not sure because I can’t understand understand a f***ing word they say.”

  1. David do you know which network Boss is most likely to go to if it does get a run here? I have seen the first 4 episodes and love it, well deserved win for Kelsey Grammer, his performance in Boss is well above any of his previous work, by far!

Although i think the show is amazing i think it may struggle to keep an audience in Australia as it requires attentive viewers… Australia only seems to be able to commit to watching the big bang theory over and over again!
