Axed: RPM

TEN's confusing messages about its commitment to Sport continues as it axes motorsport panel show RPM.

TEN’s confusing messages about its commitment to Sport continues with news that it has axed motorsport panel show RPM ahead of the 2012 racing season.

The show which airs on ONE, hosted by Greg Rust, Daryl Beattie and Craig Baird, was previously axed in 2008 before being resurrected again last year.

Last year it moved to a later timeslot following ONE’s shift away from sports programming.

A statement says, “Network TEN can confirm that RPM will not be on ONE in 2012.

“Greg Rust, Daryl Beattie and Craig Baird will continue to host Network TEN’s coverage of the 2012 Formula One and MotoGP seasons.”

Although the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix is less than a month away, it remains unclear whether TEN will take the Sky Sports or the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Formula One commentary feeds this season.

The 2012 season marks the second in a five-year deal between TEN and Formula One.

In January 2011 when RPM was revived, Sam Heard, Head of Marketing – Sport said, “Formula One is our biggest property on ONE, generating fantastic ratings. Motorsport as a whole is very popular with our audience, and felt the time was right to bring it back.”

  1. I feel sorry for Greg, Daryl and Craig who did a great job hosting this dreadfully formatted RPM 2.0. It was nothing more than 60 minutes of commercials occasionally interrupted by something about motorsport! Ignorant decisions made by motorsport philistines, totally in-touch with the sales manager and totally out-of-touch with the audience. Doomed to fail. God help us if this new look Lachlan Murdoch 10 Network gets the V8 Supercars.

  2. I remember when Bill Woods hosted RPM back in the 90s and early 2000s but when they lost the V8s Greg Rust took over, all i care about is that they broadcast the F1 season Live and exclusive on ONE, they would be stupid and mad not to considering it was a ratings winner for them since moving it to ONE. It would be good if they could keep RPM on ONE in prime time to compliment the F1 and maybe V8 coverage but very few network have a good complimentary show to compliment their sports coverage.

  3. That’s a seemingly odd thing to do for such an inexpensive program with such a readily identifiable advertising demo, especially given Ten’s stated desire for the V8s (presumably in addition to the F1).

Ten will need to go with the SkySports commentary, for consistency throughout the season, but the vision will be the standard world feed.

@Jack – I was thinking the same thing.

Ten – Home of mixed motorsport messages.

  4. Damn you TEN! I only watched RPM for the F1 bits and was hoping if they got the V8 we’d get more on there. I guess if they get the V8s back then RPM might come back again.

As for the F1 I’ll just be glade if we get TV coverage after hoe screw up with the WRC leaving it of TV screens world wide. But I think they’ll take the Sky Sports coverage, isn’t the BBC only doing selected rounds?
