BSkyB adds pay per view online

UK Pay TV operator BSkyB takes on Netflix by allowing Brits to pay for content online without needing a subscription.

Is this the TV equivalent of a paywall or a clever revenue earner?

Britain’s Pay TV operator BSkyB will launch an online catch-up for a user-fee, as a way of competing with platforms such as DVD rental company Netflix.

The new service offering movies and sports will tap into 13 million homes which do not pay for its television service.

It will launch in the first half of 2012 and will enable customers to watch Sky content on a range of flexible tariffs and without signing a contract.

In Australia Foxtel has recently made available a suite of channels to homes with the XBox 360, without the need for Foxtel installation.

BSkyB has not yet set out its pricing plans.

  1. Any chance we could see Foxtel do something similar here…? They already offer for a fee online viewing of live channels on smart-phone devices for Telstra Bigpond Mobile customers…
