New FOX Footy commentator Dermott Brereton is attempting to defend comments he made on Facebook about a female columnist for The Age.
The incident arose after former AFL manager Ricky Nixon attacked a column written by Age journalist Suzanne Carbone earlier this week.
Carbone wrote a piece, sourced from Nixon’s own website, about Nixon charging $1500 to entertain his fans at a football corporate box.
But Nixon used Facebook and Twitter to complain about how unfair and inaccurate he thought the story was, referring to Carbone as “CarDog.”
After one online comment suggested that the “poor girl [Carbone] just needs a good shag!” Nixon responded that he would vote for “Dermott to do that on our behalf haha”.
Brereton quickly responded: “I don’t do charity like that ..!”
Brereton, who also appears on Nine’s Getaway, said he believed the Facebook page could only be seen by Nixon and a small group of followers. He dismissed the remark as “a throwaway line.”
He also accused The Age of sensationalising his comments and said he had a positive attitude towards women.
But the comments come at a time when the AFL is trying to demonstrate better respect for females, and just months after Kyle Sandilands was slammed for insulting remarks directed at a female journalist.
FOX Sports declined to comment on the incident when contacted by TV Tonight.

It’s free publicity David. If it breaks a law then sue otherwise what’s with the moral police by some
That aint bad. I’m more offended by his hair. Or Michael Hussey’s surname.
What a bunch of wowsers we have become.
well the age would overreact as usual. they are run by the church
Not a fan of Dermott but I’d hardly classify that as a sexist remark. You certainly couldn’t compare that with Kyle’s comments.
