Farewell Smallville

After 218 episodes, Clark Kent departs our screens as he prepares to become the man of steel.

It started life on the now defunct WB Network in 2001, and in Australia on Nine. But could have thought a series about a young Clark Kent could last for ten seasons without ever turning him into the man of steel?

The final episode of Smallville airs in Australia tomorrow night. Across that time it has had at least four different homes: Nine, Pay TV, TEN and ELEVEN.

Tom Welling has stuck it out for 218 episodes, while other actors have come and gone. Even the late Christopher Reeve gave an endorsement to the series.

The series ended its US run in May last year and airs in Australia at 9:30pm Monday on ELEVEN.

Here are just a few memories from across the years…

  1. I just want to thank you David and anyone else that supplied the ratings last year for the show. And since it’s my last chance to ask I don’t suppose you could please mention the last episode rating for the final time in your report about Monday. Maybe even the New Zealand figures too if they’ve seen it and the U.S. figures as well so there can be a proper ratings argument.

P.S. Just kidding about the last two requests. 😉

  2. @ DeeCee

If it was when Ten moved it from Friday night to Saturday then it would of been season 6 . ‘Cos I’ll admit that’s when I gave up; and they then moved it to HD so that made it impossible to watch it. I know they aired at least season 7 and maybe some, possibly most, of season 6 . I’m not sure of the latter.

BTW if you can get overseas DVDs then Region 1 or the U.S. and Canada have a special DVD box set with all episodes plus 2 bonus discs as well as other goodies if you’re interested. I warn you Region 2 or the U.K. doesn’t have the bonus discs if you get it from there. I doubt we’ll get it here. But the last season will be available 4 April here. So look out for sales (maybe $20-30 per season ) if you want to get them here around that time or even earlier.

  3. Loved it from the beginning, season 4 almost had me give up on the show. Stuck with it and i’m happy that i did.

I was disappointed at the treatment of the show by Channel 9, pleased that the dvds came out at a regular pace.

  4. I lost track of this series years ago so I ended up watching it on DVD. I also decided to wait until season 10 came out DVD instead of watching it on Eleven (even there it changed timeslots). The final scenes have been a YouTube for a while now and I was able to watch it there.

  5. I remember hating this show when it first came to channel 9. But then ten played it from the beginning and i fell in love with it. Yes some of it maybe over the top and it may have lost some of its main stars but i enjoyed the ride and im glad that other fans that haven’t seen the finale yet get to see it climax. Longest running scifi show ever which is pretty cool.
BTW David great photos, brings back a few memories, especially the top right one which was from the pilot.

  6. Clark still hasn’t learnt to fully fly on his own though, so it will have to be made believable in the final episode!

Anyway I’ve watched this since the very first episode on 9, and with all their screwing about and cuts of it I used to wish it was on at a later time, and then another network.

Finally 10 came along and picked it up after it had been gathering dust for a short while, and 10 treated it great. Sometimes even 4 episodes a week! Though later on they made it exclusive to 10HD I could still watch it there, but knew others who didn’t have HD signal at the time were missing out. Sadly though it didn’t last for very long on 10HD either as that ceased and became One.

Thankfully after some time 10 started up 11 and gave Smallville a new home. I did not watch series 9 or the end of 8 there as I got sick of waiting and so bought the blu-rays from the US but have been watching series 10 on 11.

Seems strange to finally be at the end. It has been around for quite a while so it is a bit sad too and I hope to see those who appeared in this as cast members appear in other things. Would have been interesting had Tom Welling been able to continue the role of Superman in the movie that is to be released soon instead of Henry Cavill.

  7. Thanks David for always keeping up with this show!

I remember first watching it on Nine all those years ago. Eventually, I got sick of the way they treated it and ended up just buying the show every year on DVD and watching it in my own time under my own schedule. It’s actually one of the few shows I have watched every episode from start to finish and have the entire series on DVD. I’ll be sad to see it go…

Just one little amendment to the article though, it was just announced that they are making a season 11… In comic book form!!!

  8. I managed to see all of the seasons, bar season nine. Most seasons i have really enjoyed. I have found the last few a little tedious. They messed around with the Superman legend way too much, for mine. Would have liked to have seen Clark become Superman at the start of the last season. But for the most part an entertaining show.

  9. Due to Eleven stupidly only showing double eps of season 8, but not of season 9 as well, this comes almost a year after it aired in North America, so most Aus Smallville show fans have already seen it.

We’re still 3 seasons behind 90210, that needs to be shown on Eleven at a later evening timeslot (like 10.30 pm Saturdays) in double eps for 6 months to catch up.

  10. As everyone has already said, Ten HD played about two seasons exclusively after they stopped showing it in the Sunday 6:30pm slot on Ten (which is now the Merlin spot – anyone else see a sci-fi trend?). I unfortunately didn’t watch seasons 6 and 7 due to its change to Ten HD (living in the M.I.A. and not having digital sister channels until last month), and have watched season 8 on FOX8 and now waiting for them to start showing season 9 and 10. I’m glad the show went out on a high instead of being like the many U.S. shows which go on and on until the network axe them at a cliffhanger.

  11. I’m proud to say I watched all 218 eps and while it had it’s ups and downs I was still a good show throughout.

The final is a bit cheesy but has a nice ending which will bring the show full circle for the fans.

Looking at his bio I’m amazed Tom Welling hasn’t done more outside of the show, I think he’s going it to the directing side of things now but I hope we get to see him on TV again soon.

  12. P.S. I forgot to thank the WB and whomever is involved in releasing the DVDs here in Australia. Because without the DVDs I really wouldn’t have been able to see most of the series reliably. Even thanks to Channel Nine just for introducing it. Other than Sherlock it’s the last series I got to see at least one season of. Unfortunately I don’t know if it’ll ever happen again. I still hope I can see Fringe on GO! It’d be brilliant.

    Sorry David for the length.

  13. You forgot Ten HD David. I remember it because it was the only thing I didn’t have access to at the time. As SD digital wasn’t very reliable for Ten I didn’t know if the HD signal would work in my area.

Thank you David for all the articles over the years for this show as well as the heads up on what might be happening. Also thank you Eleven for showing the last season during prime time on a weekday. As well as putting season 9 on at a time I could watch it (most of it ) . Lastly thank you to everyone that made the show I doubt you’ll read it but I’ve enjoyed it over the years.
