Oops. Family Guy replays Whitney jokes.

7mate played an episode of Family Guy that had gags about Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown.

Oh dear.

Last night 7mate played an episode of Family Guy from Season Nine, “Brian’s got a Brand New Bag.”

The only problem was, it contained a gag about Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown.

  1. Just the alignment of coincidences…. shown by…

Glee has just done a Valentines Day episode with Mercedes singing “I will always love you”

It actually sent shivers down my spine and I wasn’t a great Whitney fan.

But can we lay blame on the show that was written, recorded and produced weeks, even months ago?

No. But it will most likely get a shedload of repeats and be a constantly referenced to Glee actually having somewhat a finger on the pulse. Or a chick on the staff who has a great crystal ball.

  2. Ahh settle down David 🙂 I was just making a point… what’s worse? Seth McFarlane putting the gag in the original show, 7Mate showing the full 24 minute episode containing the 9 second gag and obviously not realising that it was in there, or the blogger who just displays the 9 second gag without the lead in or follow through? The eternal conundrum 🙂

I couldn’t care less really. Tradgedy + time = comedy.

  3. Oops. TV Tonight replays Whitney jokes while pointing out that Family Guy replays Whitney jokes.

    Oh dear.

Today tvtonight.com.au displayed a gag about Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown while reporting about Family Guy playing same offending gag.

    1. Of course I did -to illustrate the context of the story. The episode was not a major misdemeanour it was an “oops” moment and written as such. Are we suggesting personal blogs now follow broadcasting conventions too?

  4. If it’s insensitive, does it not mean that some people are easily offended, rather than it being disrespectful. It seems to be a reasonable joke if you omit Whitney Houston’s recent passing. Who decides on how soon is too soon anyway.

  5. I can understand this being an issue if it was new but seriously this is an old ep and I just don’t see the problem.

It’s 9/11 all over again when they started editing shows to remove any mention of the twin towers or the Buffy ep they delayed because of a school shooting around the same time, it was one of their best episodes.

  6. I was actually watching this last night and was actually a little shocked when the Whitney & Bobby joke came on, Still didn’t stop it from being a fun episode though.

  7. I was watching The Simpsons episode in New York the other day and on the audio commentary they said that they had to accept the fact that the specific episode would no longer be in syndication – they stated that dvd would be the only way people would be able to see it and they felt bad about the jokes that they had made – one in particular about all of the “jerks living in tower one”.

  8. I agree with Justin – how is this even an issue. Fox8 managed to accidentally replay the Homer Simpson Vs New York episode within weeks of 9/11, and I don’t remember anyone saying a word about that.

Plus, yeah – it’s Family Guy; nothing is off limits, and when the episode was first aired, the main thing a lot of people associated with Whitney Houston was “drugs, Bobby Brown, oh yeah she sang well too” – why do we have to deify her or tip toe around any mention of her now that she is unfortunately dead (from an accident, mind).

  9. I don’t see how it is a problem. This is a show that will frequently contain jokes about cancer, AIDS, death, and rape to name but a few. Now at any given time the show is on, there is good chance that someone watching has experienced those sorts of things recently, or knows someone who has/is. So why should there be some sort of special rule for jokes involving (now dead) celebrities? That’s not what comedy is about, if making fun of any one thing is acceptable (such as death), then everything must be acceptable, otherwise it’s just hypocrisy.
