Tasmanian football may switch from ABC

AFL Tasmania has pulled out of negotiations with the ABC and is now in talks with Southern Cross.

The ABC reports that AFL Tasmania has pulled out of negotiations with ABC TV over the broadcasting of state league football and is now in talks with Southern Cross.

Coverage of state-based sports, including Australian Rules football, has been under a cloud since mid 2011 when the broadcaster made cuts to some of its programming.

ABC had previously told leagues in South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania it wanted them to contribute more money and centralise games.

In September Managing Director Mark Scott told a Senate inquiry, “The ABC will look to work with the major football codes to secure the substantial support, both financial and logistical, that is necessary to continue the coverage of local football on ABC TV.”

  1. Southern Cross is the Seven affiliate in Tasmania and therefore has the AFL broadcast rights. How it fit the state league in its weekend schedule depends on whether the afternoon matches will be shown live or on delay (the Saturday 1.45pm game will be shown on 90 minute delay in Victoria). It could mean the state league match of the week could start at mid-morning as a lead-in to the 1.30pm AFL game. Otherwise, SC could move the state league to TDT and show it live against the AFL on the main channel (SC Tasmania).
