US actor Peter Breck, best known for his roles in The Big Valley and Maverick has died, aged 82.

US actor Peter Breck, best known for his roles in The Big Valley and Maverick has died, aged 82.

He died after a long battle with dementia.

Breck had guest roles in a number of TV series from the mid-1950s to the early 2000s, including The Virginian, Hawaiian Eye, Perry Mason, Lawman, Branded, Gunsmoke, Fantasy Island, The Fall Guy and John Doe.

On The Big Valley, he played Nick Barkley, a hot tempered rancher in a big black hat and a penchant for getting into fights. He co-starred alongside Richard Long, Charles Briles, Linda Evans and Lee Majors.

Film work included roles in Thunder Road, I Want to Live!, The Beatniks, Portrait of a Mobster, Lad: A Dog, Samuel Fuller’s Shock Corridor and Benji.

  1. Sad to see another good actor. Breck was great as Nick Barkley. He became a lifelong of Barbara Stanwyck, who played his mother on The Big Valley. You can see most episodes of The Big Valley on YouTube (only season 1 and half of season 2 have been released on DVD) as well as a number of other TV appearances.
