Willesee interviews Gillard for Sunday Night

Sunday Night has nabbed a good scoop for its first show as Mike Willesee interviews PM Julia Gillard.

Sunday Night has nabbed a good scoop for its first show back this year.

Mike Willesee will interview PM Julia Gillard who will talk about a possible Rudd challenge as well as the tent embassy protest.

The interview was filmed yesterday in the Heritage Library at the Royal Society of Victoria in Melbourne.

Iconic journalist Mike Willesee marks his return to television on Sunday Night with an exclusive one-on-one interview with Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

In a revealing and personal insight into an embattled PM and a woman under pressure, Gillard opens up to Willesee about a potential leadership challenge from Kevin Rudd as well as the role of her office in igniting the tent embassy riots. She also reflects on her family and why she is prone to hide her emotions.

A doyen of public affairs broadcasting and an inductee into the Logies Hall of Fame, Willesee joins Seven’s flagship Sunday Night ahead of the 2012 series return this week.

Also featuring this Sunday, award-winning reporter Ross Coulthart goes behind the scenes to discover the secrets of the hit series, Downton Abbey.

With $1.5 million spent on each episode, it is also one of the most expensive. Coulthart meets star actress Joanne Froggart and is given a private tour of the famous Highclere Castle estate by the real lady of the manor, Lady Carnarvon. Viewers will also enjoy a sneak peek from the new season ahead.

And in a rare treat, Sunday Night brings audiences the only Australian interview with Sir Paul McCartney ahead of the release of his new album. The greatest living songwriter of the modern age, McCartney talks about his love for Australia and his family connection to this country – as well as his string of wives, Beatlemania, the Beatles’ break-up, and the inspiration behind his latest songs.

Sunday, February 5 at 6.30pm.

  1. Wow, I loved his question, “do you cry?” hard hitting stuff from Willesee and Sunday Night. Good night Mike and good luck, I just hope Seven get whipped in the ratings for that.

  2. We waited three days to see if Mike Willesee could put off a good interview, which was fair and not intimating. Unfortunately he could not give a good interview, he is past his used by time. Retire Mike and enjoy your life, don’t subject the audience to your rudeness.

  3. He’s one of our icons and one of the best – hard hitting but also with heart – so pleased – don’t generally watch the show – hosts are meh, but will definately be tuning in ‘just to see Mike’

  4. Sorry, Willesee’s already said on radio that he couldn’t break through through the “wall”.

And any producer knows that a politician is real turn-off material.

Besides that, unfortunately Mike’s passed his prime.

  5. Couldn’t stand yet another interview with our bogan PM, droning on in her Kath and Kim voice and her wooden face. Like most Aussies I’ll be watching the one day cricket.

  6. I agree Jonno .. both Ann and Lucy are displaying their rather juvenile ignorance, and probably wouldn’t know a good interview/er if their life depended on it.

    Welcome back Mike !

  7. @ Ann & Lucy, To call Mike Willesee a has been is a very lazy, cheap and ageist
comment. He is the father of Current affairs in this country and cheap comment like this is very disrespectful. Why do we treat our elders in this country this way when in many countries overseas they use their wisdom to its full advantage. In America people older than willesee are still anchoring news bulletins and Current affairs. barbara walters is over 80.

  8. Jonno, I couldn’t agree more!
I grew up watching Mike and I’ve missed him. Let’s hope he can get past the programmed answers and get Julia to look somewhat human. It’s a big ask, but if anyone can do it, it will be Mike Willesee.

  9. Will be interesting to see if Willesee has lost his golden touch. I doubt it. The guy is a genious and love it when the subject answers his question and he just stays silent for a moment and stares right through them. I would also love to see him interview Tony Abbott. In a way its sad that after all these years we do not have anyone that can replace Wlllesee, Oaks,Richard Carlton, Paul Lyneham or Kerry Obrien. They don’t breed them like they use to.

  10. YTT is Young Teenagers Time. SN is Seniors News. Older folks will watch this, based on dramatic changes to YTT, and teens will watch YTT based on News bring “Boring” to them.

  11. With MIke Willesee back at what he does best, this should be interesting viewing, otherwise this would be a non event. Also, the Paul McCartney interview should be a gem, great scoops for Sunday Night for their first program for the year.

  12. I wonder if he’ll find the “real” Julia to interview, or just the robot we’ve all come to know and love (or loathe}?
I’ll find out the next day from the news reports I guess.

  13. This Gillard interview looks really interesting and I love that Willesee is back. Thanks for the heads up David, wouldn’t have known about it otherwise.
