UK to revive Yes, Prime Minister.

A classic Britcom gets a new lease of life at the hands of the original writers.

Britain is set to revive 1980s hit comedy Yes, Prime Minister.

The Westminster satire will be brought back to life as a six-part series by original writers Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay for subscription channel Gold.

The new version will feature Jim Hacker (originally Paul Eddington) leading a coalition government tackling economic mayhem and a Scottish independence referendum. It will be based on the stage play version of Yes, Prime Minister which also recently toured Australia.

Director of commissioning for Gold’s parent company UKTV, Jane Rogerson, said: “The political landscape in Britain today is the perfect setting for Yes, Prime Minister to return.”

Casting for the show has not yet been announced.

Yes, Prime Minister began life as Yes, Minister in 1980 and ran until 1988.

  1. Hmmm. Hard shoes to fill and why touch it when it stands as it does so well. I know his co stars of The Good Life, Briers, Kendall and Keith all declined to revive that show because it wouldn’t be the same without Paul. However, I still dream of The Good Life reunited now as a UK Christmas Special

  2. Best… Show… Ever

However it’ll be interesting to see who they cast, as this could make or break it. The original sets a very high standard to meet.

  3. Booyah!

@Sifter actually this restores the balance in the universe for making up for the terrible news that there will be another Anchorman 🙂

  4. Are Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry busy cause I reckon they’d be the only two who could fill Paul Eddington and Sir Nigel Hawthrone’s shoes with ease. Fry did champion the show in Britain’s Best Sitcom.

  5. That’s wonderful news, it’s a classic format well worth revisiting, especially with the original writers on board.
I’ve always felt that the Minister series, plus Frontline, should be made compulsory viewing in schools. There’s many a truth told in jest.

  6. Fantastic news. I was tossing up whether to go to the stage production, but now I guess I don’t have to. And this on the day when Anchorman 2 is confirmed – it just keeps getting better!

  7. It’s still touring. I’m off to see the stage play tonight in Canberra. Looking forward to it, hopefully a short series will be great in the current political climate.
