Victoria, the last Frontier for NBC.

NBC pilot The Frontier, created by Shaun Cassidy, is currently filming in Victoria.

Sony Pictures is filming the pilot of its new western series The Frontier in Victoria for NBC.

The $6m pilot actually began shooting near the towns of Thornton, Alexandra and Mansfield in mid-March.

Created by former pop star turned producer Shaun Cassidy, it chronicles the journey of a group of travellers from Missouri to the West Coast in 1840.

The relatively youthful cast includes Ethan Embry, Megan Ferguson, Jake McLaughlin and Bridget Regan. It is directed by West Wing, ER and Ally McBeal veteran Thomas Schlamme.

Cassidy has previously written for American Gothic, Invasion and Blue Bloods.

Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said the production will spend about $6 million in the state’s economy and the first US TV production since HBO’s big-budget mini-series The Pacific in 2007-08.

It is expected to wrap up in early April, ahead of decisions about whether a full season is greenlit or not.

  1. “Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said the production will spend about $6 million in the state’s economy and The Pacific in 2007-08.” Not sure about that last bit is something missing?

  2. +1 for American Gothic. Add Dark Skies, Now and Again, and Taken to that list. (I know Taken was a miniseries and ran its planned course, but there was more there). Gee, Eric Close had a lot of short-term employment until he started Without a Trace.
