ABC1: ANZAC Day coverage

ABC1 will screen its annual ANZAC Day march in each state and Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux services.

Next Wednesday ABC1 will screen its annual ANZAC Day coverage of marches in each state and the Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux services.

2012 marks the 97th anniversary of the action by Australian, New Zealand and other Commonwealth troops in 1915.

ANZAC Day March 2012 (NSW) – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 9.00am (LIVE)

In Sydney ex-servicemen and women will march from the Martin Place Cenotaph along George Street to the War Memorial in Hyde Park. Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO, Governor of New South Wales, will lead the ANZAC Day March in Sydney and commentary is provided by Lt Col John Moore RFD. The NSW Police Force will be given pride of place near the start of the march due to its 150th Anniversary and will be lead by the Commissioner, Andrew Scipione. The NSW march will also be broadcast live in the ACT from 9.00 – 10.30am and in the NT from 9.00 – 11.00am.

Live coverage of the VIC Anzac Day March as veterans and families remember those who served in all of Australia’s wars, with commentary and analysis from the ABC’s team of experts.

The VIC march will also be broadcast live in TAS from 9.00 – 10.55am.

ANZAC Day March 2012 (QLD) – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 10.00am (LIVE)
In Brisbane the march converges on George and Adelaide Streets with the Governor Penelope Wensley to give the salute. The march will be hosted by David Curnow, 7pm news reader, Leo Walsh, curator Qld military memorial museum, and Dr Jack Ford, military historian specialising in WW2. Jenny Woodward, 7pm news will provide live roving interviews.

ANZAC Day March 2012 (TAS) – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 10.55am (LIVE)
Hosted by ABC News presenter Damian McIvor with expert commentary from Major Phil Pyke, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in the annual march from the Hobart Town Hall in Macquarie St to the Hobart Cenotaph. The Parade is followed by a Commemorative Service at the Cenotaph.

ANZAC Day March 2012 (SA) – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 9.00am (LIVE)
The local Dawn Service conducted at the War Memorial on North Terrace will be shown from 9am as a precursor to live coverage of the ANZAC Day March that commences at 9.35am. Following the march there will be a tribute featuring the recollections of some remarkable local veterans who served in some of the key battles of 1942, followed by live coverage of the Service of Remembrance at the Cross of Sacrifice. The telecast will be hosted by Ian Henschke (891 Adelaide, mornings) who will be joined by respected academic, author and writer Professor Bill Gammage. 891 Adelaide’s ‘night owl’ Peter Goers, will be out and about ‘on the buses’ chatting with veterans who, although no longer able to complete the march on foot, are still as keen as ever to be a part of this very important day.

ANZAC Day March 2012 (NT) – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 11.00am (LIVE)
In Darwin, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph on the Esplanade, followed by the march down Knuckey Street in Darwin’s CBD.

Live coverage of the WA Anzac Day March as veterans and families remember those who served in all of Australia’s wars, with commentary and analysis from the ABC’s team of experts.

Following the marches will be the Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux and the Lone Pine Gallipoli services.

Gallipoli Dawn Service 2012
National – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 12.30pm (LIVE AEST)

ABC TV’s Stephanie Brantz will host the Dawn Service from the Anzac Commemorative site at Canakkale, North Beach in Turkey.

Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Service
National – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 1.30pm (LIVE AEST)

Lone Pine Service From Gallipoli
National – ABC1 – Wednesday, April 25 at 5.00pm (LIVE AEST)

Stephanie Brantz and the ABC team will cover the Lone Pine Commemorative Service, where one of the most famous assaults of the Gallipoli campaign took place. The Battle of Lone Pine is remembered as a rarity for the ANZAC, as a ‘success’ at the price of 2200 Australians and about 7000 Turks killed or wounded.

  1. And to partly to defend Steve, it wasn’t that long ago when many Australians were questioning the validity of ANZAC Day. It’s only in the last thirty years that ANZAC Day has slowly come to the prominence it has now.

  2. It will be interesting to see what is covered if the threatened march by people from the Aboriginal Tent Embassy after the official march in the ACT eventuates.

  3. @Steve I dare you to say that to anyone who has served their country, go on see what happens to you. Respect has everything to do with it. These Men and Women put their lives on the line for you. Wake up!
