“Ageing formats” facing TEN axe

TEN's new CEO James Warburton flags "ageing formats" as being set for the dustbin. But which shows?

Key programs at TEN could face the axe from the new CEO James Warburton.

“Potentially there are some ageing formats that have served us well in the past that won’t be here,” he told The Australian.

There is speculation these include Logie Award winner Bondi Rescue and Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation -the latter is been facing an uncertain future for the second year in a row.

Part of his plan is to make TEN more than being perceived as just “the MasterChef network.”

“We are very confident in MasterChef as it moves to Shine. It’s back to real people, real food, real stories. We’re very confident the genre continues to be popular.”

Warburton also indicated content decisions, including the future for Breakfast, were management decisions not the board of directors.

But he said he would continue to stand by the new show despite a ratings low of 9000 viewers last week amid aggressive marketing from its competitors at Seven and Nine.

Observers believe it has until the end of the year to reach 100,000 viewers a day.

  1. How awesome would that be to have TAYG on ABC at 8.30 Wednesday. Would rate well, you know ABC wouldn’t screw with it and move it around the schedule constantly. The show runs 90 mins with ads, so could run on time in an hour. Go on Ten, axe it please so ABC can pick it up

  2. Please don’t get rid of TAYG and Bondi Rescue. They are great shows.
And don’t get rid of TBL, Bondi Vet and The Project either. They are also great shows.

  3. What everybody else said.

You know when some random person on the internet says that they could do some job better than some highly-paid professional and, while you agree with their sentiment, you know that they couldn’t really? Well, I think in the case of programming and scheduling for the Ten Network that it’s probably true. In fact, I find hard to envision anyone doing a worse job unless they were actively sabotaging the network.

Some really unfathomable decision-making in recent times.

  4. At least they finally put GNW down… one sensible decision made. That was one show that was well and truly aged beyond its natural life.

TBYG had potential to fill the gap left by Spicks And Specks but its erratic scheduling in the past has probably done it no favours now.

As for Breakfast… well it’s hard to come back from 9,000… a test pattern would get more viewers. I’m all for having patience and letting it build but 100k I think would be beyond Breakfast’s grasp even after a year. There is just no buzz about this show. Viewers not interested in Today or Sunrise are finding ABC News Breakfast as an alternative, Ten’s just not on anyone’s radar at that time of day.

  5. Why don’t Ten find a 100 people off the street ask them some hard questions about content ignore “Yes Men” executive that are too scared to upset management by having their own opinion and actually stick to a game plan.
Constantly hearing about these theoretical ratings based on a few boxes scattered throughout the Country is as insulting as being told Climate change is fact and just because a heap of scientist all relying on grant money support it.
Kerry Packer and his early contemporaries would take a hunch stick to it and make it work, time they all got off their collective asses and employed more of those in touch as opposed to those being touched up.
….I am available and I am sure most of those on this forum should be contacted as well.

  6. Put them back in their time-slots and look at all of the other duds 10 is producing! If they don’t want to be seen as the “Masterchef Network” and they want to get rid of an “aging format” why not kill two birds with one stone and axe masterchef – ratings and interest levels are dropping – rest it for a year.

  7. I’ve only caught the end of Breakfast and that’s about it. I thought there was never a need for it in the first place.

I think Your Gen should stay. I always enjoy it. Even if they make 10 episodes I think it would work.

Maybe TEN should ask its viewers what they want. Have a poll or something on the web site.

  8. If any Bondi show should be axed, it should be Bondi Vet, the show that has Never rated well. People are right, Rescue still has a place on the network, especially after another Logies win.

If Micallef is willing to return, give TBYG another season. If he isn’t, sure, end it. But it has to return to 7:30 Tuesday if it does return!!!

  9. Yeah, let’s dump Logie Award-winning Bondi Rescue, to be replaced by…..?
Do people at TEN make changes just for the sake of it and to prove they are needed in “management”?
Like so many others I’ve completely given up trying to chase TEN’s programs around the schedule.
Please TEN, drop TBYG so another channel can pick it up, hopefully ABC or 7.

  10. Man….these guys have to be deliberately trying to destroy a network with close to a 50 year heritage…. All the decisions that have been made in the last 12 months are so deliberately bad. And here are more. Video hits axing, AFL axing, Late news axing, Switcherooo programming, Hiring Henry, Saving Dollars and going with a YTT ratter that chasing something that is proven OS to work….and now you want to axe probably the only good shows left…TAYG and Bondi…..oh but hang on…lets keep the Bolt report going!!! OMG….Will somebody there make some good quality decisions…cause this brand is going to die within 24 months unless some serious investment is made into programs you can build a network around. Seven will pick up TAYG at will get double the figures – Why cause that have invested in programming /rights several years ago and now even crap programs rate on Seven.

    So so sad!

  11. Hey wait… I have a great idea..

How about returning these shows to their original time slots and original nights where they were a hit and maybe the viewers will return. You can’t keep yanking content all over the week and expect viewers not to get fed up.

  12. 9000 viewers? Seriously? I bet Andrew Rochford is regretting giving up his Sydney bbreakfast radio gig for this slow-motion train wreck.

If they axe TABYG and Bondi Rescue, they are insane. Another network would pick both of these shows up in a heartbeat.

  13. Don’t blame the formats, blame your programming department. TAYG is a great show. Was one of the best rating programs for Ten. Shaun Micallef is the best thing on tv and Charlie, Josh and Amanda are great cast too. But Ten moved the show from it’s successful timeslot and moved it around numerous times and smothered with repeats.

Masterchef, it’ll prob still rate decently for them, but i think it’s glory days are over, and I for one won’t be watching this year. Last year absolutely killed the show for me. Dalai Lama episode being the last straw.

9,000 viewers for Breakfast…LOL that’s more than it deserves. Getting Paul Henry was the worst decision they could have made for a host. No one in NZ likes him, why would anyone in Australia like him? We told you so Ten.

  14. Breakfast had 9000 viewers? I should let the old lady across the street who walks s few dogs twice a week know that she can advertise her business on channel 10.

  15. I don’t think its the formats as much as it is the network.
Ten need to launch next year without the usual suspects in place.
TBL has a place on Ten’s schedule but maybe they should hold out on it and launch something new at the top of the year to freshen the schedule and network image a bit and hold loser back to post-MC?!
Same goes for Bondi Rescue – it still has a life on the network IMO.
TAYG could well be done though.

  16. Why would you axe a program that’s still in its prime and winning 5 logies in a row?? If they axe bondirescue they’re insane!! The ratings are still good and it’s well received overseas like here in the uk!! Then again so was rescue and sea patrol but that didn’t matter!! Glad I live in uk tv programmes last longer.
