Another Chevy Chase leak: Community is a “f***ing mediocre sitcom”

Another audio clip between actor Chevy Chase and Community creator Dan Harmon has emerged.

Another audio clip between actor Chevy Chase and Community creator Dan Harmon has emerged, that illustrates how aggrieved Chase is with the show’s artistic direction.

In a phone call posted on Celebuzz, Chase tells Harmon he is unhappy with the editing of his scenes and the storyline.

“Like everyone gives a shit about the f***ing story when they don’t even know who the f***ing characters are?

“You’re missing the f***ing point! I mean, this is not my kind of comedy. I thought you hired me for what I do that’s funny. You’ve got to give me some range.”

Chase told Harmon “obviously you don’t get my humour at all,” to which Harmon replied, “That’s true.”

“Or what is it that I do that’s funny that actually makes people laugh,” said Chase.

“I do agree with that,” Harmon responded.

Chase did compliment Harmon on his writing but said he wasn’t present at either the shoot or the editing, before adding, “It’s just a f***ing mediocre sitcom! I want people to laugh and this isn’t funny.

“It ain’t funny to me because I’m 67-years-old and I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve been making a lot of people laugh — a lot better than this.”

Chase has since said the message was more than 12 months old.

The news follows audio of an expletive-laden phone message that Chase left to Harmon which became public last month.

Harmon has since apologised for making it public at a comedy venue, noting, “It was in that venue, months ago, that I made the horrible, childish, self-obsessed, unaware, naive and unprofessional decision to play someone’s voicemail to me.

He didn’t intend for 150 people to listen and giggle at it, and I didn’t intend for millions of people to read angry reports about it. I was doing what I always do, and always get in trouble for doing, and always pay a steep price for doing. I was thinking about myself and I was thinking about making people laugh.”

NBC is yet to confirm if Community will be renewed.

  1. I’ll say this first, I really like community. I hope the show gets six seasons and a movie.

I think part of the problem is, it’s an ensemble cast and Chevys character is one of the less prominent ones. He’s really 6th or 7th lead. It seems he’s unhappy about that.

I enjoy Chevy on the show, but really his character could be cut with little damage. He’s more often than not just there for comic relief. It seems this will probably be the best move going forward.

You can kind of get a sense of the problem. He was a big name in comedy and isn’t comfortable taking a back seat. He also seems a little out of touch with what the show is. You could imagine the frustration the writers must have. He thinks he’s knows better, when he probably just doesn’t quite get this shows humor. The gag with things stuck in his cast should be more focus than the characters stories???

The thing comedy writers on sitcoms hate the most is notes from the actors who don’t quite get it. This was apparently horrible on Friends. Where Mathew Perry was the only one who got it. Everyone else apparently had stupid ideas, culminating in Jenifer Aniston, while dating Brad Pitt suggesting they make the show more like “fight club.” Which then became a running joke in the writers rooms when ever they were stuck. “Lets make it more like fight club!.”

So it seems Chevy is falling into this. He needs to either accept his role as an actor or let it be. I am guess with the show, despite being excellent not setting the ratings world on fire. He thinks he can save it, knows best ect. When his suggesting of the cast gag being extended, is a sign he doesn’t get it.

  2. Chevy Chase should probably be grateful for having a job at all. His blatant sight-gag comedy is old hat now and there’s very little market for it.

That said, I think Community is probably on its last legs. This season has improved, but it started out very badly.

  3. Could they be using this Chevy Chase thing to get the show more publicity and new viewers checking it out to boost the ratings?

I hope Community comes back, but it’s not looking good.
