Matthew Newton arrested in Miami

Newton is charged with trespassing on property and resisting an officer.

Matthew Newton has been arrested in the United States.

Miami Dade County Corrections confirmed Newton was charged with trespassing on property after a warning and resisting an officer without violence to his person.

US authorities told The Age a $US2000 bond was posted for his release through a local bondsman at 10am Saturday local time.

Media have published a mugshot (pictured) that shows him dishevelled, with a small bruise above his right eye.

The saga is the latest in a long string of headlines documenting domestic abuse and reports of mental illness.

But it comes just a week after Newton, 35, was ordered by a Sydney judge to face court over assault charges against him.

In Australia Newton is charged with punching a taxi driver in the the neck while he was seated in his taxi at Crows Nest in northern Sydney on December 4.

His Australian lawyer Chris Murphy had said Newton was recovering in a “peaceful, Midwestern community” in the USA.

Murphy recently told a court his client was taking a “bomb load of medication”, for bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorder, including an anti-psychotic, a mood stabiliser and an anti-depressant.

Newton will be notified of his pending US court date within the next 10 days.
