Ratings trouble for Young Talent Time

TEN's Friday night move for Young Talent Time has failed -down to just 343,000 viewers.

TEN’s Friday night move for Young Talent Time has failed.

On Friday it rated just 343,000 viewers, even lower than The Bold & the Beautiful (436,000).

At 7pm it was knocked over by ABC News (947,000 ) and The Big Bang Theory (785,000).

Home and Away aired in 3 cities to 656,000.

The talent show had a lead-in of 451,000 viewers but 108,000 viewers then switched off. TEN’s network share for the night slumped to fourth on just 14.1%.

YTT had gained ground on the preceding Friday but the latest figures are disastrous.

YTT has received mostly positive reviews for host Rob Mills and its young performers but despite a return to family entertainment, audiences appear to prefer shows with Reality-style jeopardy.

TEN moved the show to Fridays after its Sunday performance wasn’t firing, and in doing so improved Sundays thanks to The Biggest Loser.

  1. When Hey Hey It’s Saturday went up against the original YTT, it trampled YTT and the long run it had ended. Of course YTT also did’t have any real competition all those years which kept it at the top for so long. I couldnt see it continuing anyway due to falling ratings, and should have been left to lie in peace rather than revive something that simply “lost it” long ago. As for time slots, well, with AFL and NRL games all over the place today, it just wouldn’t and hasn’t worked anywhere so far. In any case, it has always been the push from old fans of the original to bring it back, but has been aimed at a new generation which just has no interest in the large numbers needed. I see no point in comparing it to the old show, and that is something which comes from disgruntled fans of that one who are on a nostalgia trip.

  2. I am really torn. I was an avid fan of the original, watching it from when it started (I was six!) all the way through till it ended in 1988. I think the problem with the new show is indicative of the changes in the last 24 years, not only in society, but particularly young people. And the taste of the general public has altered. Things may have been different if it hadn’t ended and was still going today, although if so it would have evolved to suit the times, just as the original did over the 17 years it screened. Also, the current team members don’t have that sweet naivety that endeared the previous team to the viewers. I am no prude but the Dunlop Volleys and bobby Socks Tina wore in her day are a far cry from the sky high heels, micro minis and skin tight spandex worn by those young girls and echoing an earlier poster, I remember, back then, they changed any lyrics that could be seen as provocative or inappropriate, but now many of the songs seem wrong coming out of the mouths of kids of this age. That said my daughter, who’s seven, loves it. In my opinion they need to look at the target audience. I just don’t see it appealing to the sophisticated tastes of today’s teenagers. Whereas the under 10’s, particularly girls would gobble it up. And Saturday night would be the right time for a feast.

  3. Please leave Young Talent Time on the air I am sure it will build an Audience in time The Kids are great and Rob Mills is a great host leave the show on until at least the end of the year maybe move it to Saturday Night at 6.30 as there is nothing else on TV at that time. I think The Ratings system is stupid most people never see the Ratings Books so how can the numbers be accurate

  4. Further to my previous comments, I think the old 0-10 Network which was more community minded and gave us a good alternative to the other major networks is now a bygone era, and the new 10 Network is simply a machine which spits out garbage. I give them credit however, for being environmentally conscious for “recycling”….no?

  5. No doubt it’s biggest issue is the cost of production. The embarassing thing and it’s been like this since the first episode is that the contestants are more talented than anyone in the Young Talent Team!

  6. I think this is a real pity. I’m just sooooo sick of everything on tv being a competition with such dire consequences competitors talk about it as if it’s life and death. Here’s a show that’s just for entertainment. There’s no huge prize, no bitchy people trying to beat others and strategise and ‘play the game’ – just good fun entertainment. Australian TV doesnt have much entertainment any more. It’s all bitchiness.

    So sad.

  7. Other channel ten shows do not rate, they do not get moved around or axed. YTT would have improved once day light saving finished. more people would have settled in to watch the tv. They should not have touched it. or put it back on a saturday night where it was all those years ago up against funniest home videos.

Please do not axe it. it needs to be given a chance.

  8. Putting it up against Home & Away was the stupidest idea ever so im not suprised at all, 7.30 would have been far better if they had to move it at all, i really think the ratrings on Sats would have improved over the winter months. I feel really sorry for those kids if this show gets the chop.

  9. 7pm on a Friday is just a stupid time. How about 7.30pm when most people would expect it and be looking for some family entertainment
And having a ratings hit like The Simpsons on Eleven is just as stupid.
And changing days all the time for shows like glee is on is stupid too
Ten need to start thinking logically like the average tv viewer would
Ps: ten put way to much pressure on Ytt and breakfast to work in 2012. Without offering any other new programs.
Oh boy!!! How much lower can they go!!

  11. This show is a prime example of a failed attempt to revive something that was once a brilliant family show. It could be a sign that those employed in the entertainment industry have lost any creativeness which their predecessors had in abundance. Todays young generation is way ahead of this sort of juvenile 1980s “Solid Gold” style of production.

  12. “…perhaps Ten could throw some money into a new sitcom or two?”
That’s a great idea except that they’d prob treat it the same way they’ve treated their other home-grown comedy shows such as GNW and Talking ’bout Your Generation and would no doubt be surprised when hardly anybody watches any more.

David Mott – it’s time to go. Seriously.

  13. The show has gotten better as it has gone on. At first the talent team were not singing enough songs, it was more about the talent quest. Channel Ten have destroyed it by putting it on a friday night. I also believe that they should be repeating it each week. even on channel ten at 11am on a saturday morning.

  14. Just one thing left to do…ax this rubbish! Young audiences have come along way since the early 70’s. I remember as a kid watching YTT with the whole family. Times have changed nobody wants to watch this tripe…a bunch od spoilt kids singing and dancing….dull and boring for your average 5 year old!

  15. Personally, I think Ten needs to stop recycling these awful 80’s show and concentrate on making something new. There’s a reason shows like YTT and It’s a Knockout died in the 80’s – people stopped watching them.

Here’s a radical idea, perhaps Ten could throw some money into a new sitcom or two? It’s been years since there were any good Aussie sitcoms. They could spark of a new Aussie comedy renaissance 🙂

  16. The thing that concerns me the most about this show isn’t their age, or the cheesy singing but the problem is that these young kids (who haven’t even reached puberty) singing about love, lost of life and pain… In any other singing show, they would be criticised for not being old enough to understand the emotion behind the songs.

To me they cannot deliver the songs convinsingly.

  17. I don’t see why they don’t try repeating YTT on a Saturday night at 6:30pm on ELEVEN to maybe try and get some of the younger kids who would be at home at that time and don’t fit the demo for ABC4kids or ABC3.

  18. Wow a drop of over 120,000 from last week. I will contribute last weeks higher numbers to Anthony Callea being on. Loved his performance of ‘Last to Go’ with the kids.

  19. Young Talent Time feels very out of touch with what I’d expect from a reboot. Not enough for younger people, too much “you’re all amazing” and strange “80’s nights”.

And, to be honest, I don’t see why I’d want to watch a show of songs that don’t change much from the originals and are generally worse renditions.
