Foxtel will once again screen the Tony Awards live to Australia hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, and with a special award to our own Hugh Jackman.

Foxtel will once again screen the Tony Awards live to Australia (yay!) next month on BIO.

Hosted by the too fab Neil Patrick Harris, this year’s awards at from New York’s Beacon Theatre include a Special Tony Award to our own Hugh Jackman. Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore will also be honoured.

Marking 66 years of excellence in Broadway, The Tony Awards’® ceremony is the most glamorous night of the Broadway season with dozens of stage and screen stars on hand to present the awards.

Returning to host the glamorous Awards night will be popular Emmy Award® winner, Neil Patrick Harris, from Arena’s How I Met Your Mother.

Harris who previously hosted the awards ceremony in 2011 and 2009, said: “I’m thrilled to be part of this year’s Tony Awards. Not only will I be shining a spotlight on the best that Broadway has to offer, but hopefully I’ll score some free house seats to a show — or five!”

The Tony Awards® Administration Committee has announced that it will present a Special Tony Award® to Tony winning-actor and three-time Tony Awards® host, Hugh Jackman. Jackman is being honoured for his contributions to the Broadway community, both as a performer and humanitarian; his tireless dedication to charitable works of many types; and his personal generosity of spirit.

Additionally Bernadette Peters who founded Broadway Barks!, along with Mary Tyler Moore, as a program to promote the adoption of shelter animals, will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award and a Special Tony Award® will be presented to Actors’ Equity Association, who starting in the month of June will be celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Leading this year’s nominations tally are – Once (11), Nice Work If You Can Get it (10), The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (10), Peter and The Star Catcher (9), Follies (8), Newsies (8), Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman (7), One Man, Two Guvnors (7), Other Desert Cities (5), Clybourne Park (4).

Nominations in the lead acting categories include:

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play – James Corden for One Man, Two Guvnors, Philip Seymour-Hoffman for Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, James Earl Jones for Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, Frank Langella for Man and Boy, John Lithgow for The Columnist.

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play – Nina Arianda for Venus in Fur, Tracie Bennett for End of the Rainbow, Stokard Channing for Other Desert Cities, Linda Lavin for The Lyons, Cynthia Nixon for Wit.

Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical – Danny Burstein for Follies, Jeremy Jordan for Newsies, Steve Kazee for Once, Norm Lewis for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Ron Raines for Follies.

Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical – Jan Maxwell for Follies, Audra McDonald for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Cristin Milioti for Once, Kelli O’Hara for Nice Work If You Can Get It, Laura Osnes for Bonnie & Clyde.

This year marks the 66th anniversary of the Tony Awards®, which were first held on April 6, 1947, at the Waldorf Astoria’s Grand Ballroom. The ceremonies are presented by Tony Award® Productions, which is a joint venture of The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, which founded the Tonys in 1947.

The Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards are bestowed annually on theatre professionals for distinguished achievement. The Tony is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry and the annual telecast is considered one of the most prestigious programs on television.
