BAFTA Awards: TV winners

BAFTAs honour Graham Norton, Jennifer Saunders, Coronation Street, This is England ‘88 -and a special award for Rolf Harris.

Graham Norton, Jennifer Saunders, Coronation Street, This is England ‘88, and cast members of  Appropriate Adult were amongst the winners at the 2012 BAFTA Television Awards.

But big names missed out including Benedict Cumberbatch, Maggie Smith, Alan Carr, Hugh Bonneville, Misfits, Spooks and Frozen Planet.

Australia’s The Slap also missed out on an International Award which went to Denmark’s Borgen.

However, Rolf Harris was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship recognising his “outstanding and exceptional contribution to television” -the first Aussie to receive such.

Harris told the BBC: “It’s unbelievable for a start, it’s very humbling and thrilling. I can’t tell you how exciting it was when they asked if I would accept the award.”

Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat also received the Special Award.

Receiving his award, Moffat said he owed a great deal to “the two best things the British have ever given to the world: Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who“.

  1. What? No award for Jeremy Kyle? I’m surprised no channel here has picked this gem up: The Jeremy Kyle show. Kyle is the Jerry Springer of the UK. Imagine Springer in amongst the sleeping around on a Council Estate in Britian with a provocative haughty moralising down your nose approach to the poor chavs that end up on his stage. Let’s put it this way he manages to get the worst out of his guests. Salicious TV at it’s worst/best. It’s very popular daytime TV in Britian and I’m surprised it didn’t do well. (Jennifer Saunders did a wonderful parody called Vivienne Vile).

    Sorry Alan Carr missed out, still love Graham Norton though.

  2. Very glad to see that This Is England 88 won for Best Mini Series and that The Crimson Petal and the White was nominated too – both were excellent productions.

  3. Hopefully SBS will show Borgen at some point, to complement The Killing.
    Also, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who being the best things Britain has ever given the world? Better than the jury system, or the Industrial Revolution?

  4. The Fades getting the Drama Series gong is a bit odd – it’s a weird combination of Sarah-Jane Adventures meets Demons meets Apparitions that, in my opinion, didn’t work so well. First ep was alright, the middle few were flat, and the last few looked like being utter crap before pulling a rabbit out of the hat to become merely OK.

    Misfits may be a bit much to ask, given its style, but surely Spooks (even though I’m not a fan) should have beaten it?
