Hugh Sheridan to host I Will Survive for TEN

Packed to the Rafters' Hugh Sheridan has been named as host of TEN's Priscilla talent search.

Packed to the Rafters star Hugh Sheridan has been named as host of TEN’s upcoming talent search I Will Survive.

The show searches for a ‘triple threat’ actor / singer / dancer to portray a drag queen as based on the hit movie Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.

Sheridan, who has performed in the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, said “I’m really happy to be given this opportunity and can’t wait to get started. This show is about finding Australian talent, our next big star! Someone who can master not only singing but acting and dancing, arguably the hardest three things we can do as entertainers.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know our contestants, and sharing with them what I have learnt on my own journey. It’s gonna be a tough road crossing Australia and staging impressive challenges that will see our 12 contenders battle it out to be ‘the one’.”

TEN CEO James Warburton says: “Hugh is an immensely talented young man and signing him to TEN and this project underlines our commitment to reinvestment in content and
securing the best people for all our shows.

“His arrival at the network is one of a number of key talent announcements we plan to make in the coming months.”

David Mott, Chief Programming Officer, says: “Hugh has carved out an impressive
reputation in the Australian television and entertainment industry. He is the perfect host for I Will Survive and a great addition to TEN’s stable of talent.

“This is one of a number of projects we can expect to see Hugh take part with on TEN.
I Will Survive is a fantastic and dynamic new format that lends itself to exploring a number of entertainment opportunities. This year Priscilla, next year who knows?”

The winner lands $250,000, training in the role of a ‘Tick’ (played originally by Hugo Weaving) and opportunity to showcase their talents on Broadway, but it isn’t clear if this includes a contract in the Priscilla musical in New York.

Sheridan is understood to be filming the project following production on Season Five of Packed to the Rafters.

Filming starts in late May and the series is set to air on TEN later this year.

  1. Ummmm – they are looking for someone to play a drag queen for the stage show ‘Priscilla queen of the desert”?

Does this mean there will be only male contestants?

Sorry – the whole premise of this show sounds like a stinker.

  2. Tate it easy, people. Don’t pass your judgment yet unless you’ve seen the show.
This must be a “gap year” for Hugh. It looks like there aren’t as many opportunities in US as he hoped for. Besides, this might worked. It worked for Hamish and Andy. One of them got Gold Logie. I don’t know why he got it, but it looks like others might try it as well. I agree with JayElle, I would prefer seeing Tim as a presenter.

  3. I was kinda hoping Tim Campbell might have got this gig, although it seems like the TV networks don’t like him for some reason. Oh well I won’t have to watch it now – all the best Hugh.

  4. Signing him to TEN? Sheridan has confirmed on Twitter he will still be filming Season 6 of Rafters so i doubt that he is actually signed to TEN. I personally think its a huge risk to be honest with you. Why leave the #1 team for a team bordering 4th place?

  5. wow – interesting move. The show sounds like a worry though – but hey I remember the backlash ten got when a cooking show called Masterchef was announced.

The days of talent exclusively on one network are over. They pop up everywhere now…Dicko, Shaun Micallef

  6. Hugh just tweeted to say that he will be back for season 6 of rafters. So I guess it is great news for him and all people involved.

  7. Hugh is taking a huge risk here going to work for Ten. Giving up Rafters to go do this? Really???

And what is it with actors turning to presenting? Real waste of talent.
