Comedy writer Digby Wolfe, who worked with Ronnie Corbett, Hattie Jacques and Dave Allen, has died in the US following a short battle with cancer. He was 82.

Wolfe was born in London in 1929 and began writing and performing in comedy series in England in the 1950s. He moved to Australia in 1959, where he appeared as host of the variety shows Revue’61 and Revue ’62. He was a well-known face on Australian television in an era of Graham Kennedy, Bobby Limb, Bert Newton and Bob Dyer.

In 1964, he moved to the United States, where his television credits included The Monkees, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Munsters, and he won an Emmy for his work on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.

He also wrote for Goldie Hawn, John Denver, Shirley MacLaine, Cher and Jackie Mason, among others. In 1976 he hosted two episodes of This Is Your Life in Australia.

He wrote the story for the 2001 feature All the Queen’s Men starring Matt Le Blanc and Eddie Izzard.

In later years he taught writing at University of New Mexico.

  1. David just a couple of clarifications for your article as both Wikipedia and IMDB are flawed.

    The variety show was called ‘Revue’, not ‘Review’.

    And while Digby’s stint as host of This Is Your Life was brief – he had to make a sudden return to the US due to a family illness – it was more than two episodes. I believe he hosted it for a couple of months. He and Seven also had some big projects planned which I guess was all shelved when he went back to the US. That’s when Roger Climpson took over as host of TIYL.
