After 30 years Nine dumps Entertainment Tonight

After some 30 years on Australian television Entertainment Tonight has been dumped by the Nine Network.

The Hollywood magazine show is the longest-running entertainment news program in the world.

Now it will be replaced by another US showbiz series, called Extra.

Entertainment Tonight began in 1981, with Mary Hart becoming host in 1982 and its team having included such names as Leonard Maltin, Leeza Gibbons, John Tesh, Robin Leach and Rona Barrett. Current hosts Mark Steines and Nancy O’Dell have presented since 2004 and 2011 respectively.

The show has included interviews with countless celebrities, covered endless red carpets, given thousands of movie reviews and filed a never-ending cavalcade of news and gossip. Its theme song is practically an institution.

Nine even launched an Australian edition of ET in the 1990s, co-presented by Richard Wilkins.

Nine has been screening the CBS show on afternoons for many years, and sometimes on GO!, but from Monday it replaces it with the Warner Bros.-produced show Extra, hosted by Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos.  Extra has been airing in the US since 1994. Amongst the correspondents is former Australian MTV presenter Renee Bargh.

A Nine Spokesperson confirmed to TV Tonight, “Our contract with ET came to and end and we are replacing it with Extra.”

Entertainment Tonight continues to air on Pay TV via Arena.

  1. I love Entertainment Tonight and I can’t believe that Channel 9 is dumping it. That really sucks.
Well I hope another channel picks it up (eg. Channel 10) will pick it up because I always record it and it is the only entertainment show I like that keeps up with entertainment.

  2. Ouch, now I’m worried they might consider dumping Days Of Our Lives too. I thought that and ET would be safe because of the tradition of playing it for so long.

  3. Ten have a supply deal with Paramount/CBS, so they may as well get it and put it at 3 pm, as TMZ is total garbage as a show.

Entertainment This Week is basically just a compilation of the best stories they aired during the week.

  4. With the CBS Paramount output deal that Ten have, it’d be extremely sensible for them to take it and air it. They should also take The Talk and air it against The View.

  5. ET is not a bad show it’s good to get the latest news & info of what’s happening in the U.S
TEN should pick it up & even show it on ELEVEN

  6. I used to watch it the day after the huge award shows because they always used to interview the winners, go throught the red carpet stuff and interview great people.

Didnt realise richard wilkins did a aus version on 9. Must have been great that I cant even remember it.

  7. While it doesn’t contain as much news as it did and the exclusive previews have been waning lately, the alternative Extra is going to be a lot worse on the gossip and trash.

  8. I also remember Entertainment This Week after the Sunday movie on Channel Ten. In those days it was actually a show that was worth waiting up for. These days from what I see of ET it just seems to be trashy showbiz gossip.

And some “Extra” trivia: Maria Menounos was the co-host of the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens in 2006!

  9. Saving $$$- New show will be from WB as part of output deal. ET will no doubt be on TEN/11.
WIN will be pleased they still have their 2am filler.

  10. Not happy at all. As sometimes they have exclusives. I don’t have Foxtel.

I’ve never seen Extra, but willing to give it a go. But here in Perth we get Alive and Cooking at 3pm ET only late at night on Nine or relayed on GO! the next day before TMZ.

  11. I remember when Entertainment This Week first started airing here on 10. I think it was after the Sunday movie and was hosted by Dixie Whately and a guy whose name I don’t remember.
I agree with A that the weekly version was better.

  12. That is a shame (good thing I have Arena) but to be honest I haven’t watched the show in a long time. Much easier to catch up on their website or find clips on YouTube.

  13. I’ll admit I preferred Entertainment This Week. Because it had all the good bits of ET without the time wasting stuff. Plus extra segments. I’ll admit I largely gave up watching most of the time because of the OJ Simpson trial.
