Airdate: Joanna Lumley’s Greek Odyssey

Here comes Joanna Lumley on a travelogue of Greece -but what about the Euro-crisis?

Next Tuesday ABC begins another celeb-travel series, this time with Joanna Lumley’s Greek Odyssey.

Timing wise this could be a little bit odd. After all the current story on Greece is about the economic disaster that has overtaken it. Elephant in the room?

Maybe they could have sent Patsy there with her credit card as a comedy travelogue….

The series follows Joanna on an extraordinary journey through the vast and varied landscape of Greece – the birthplace of drama, democracy, language, Western science and medicine, and the wellspring of civilisation and modern European culture.

Segueing constantly from past to present, Joanna explores the impact Greece has had on the modern world. Meeting a cast of fascinating characters in the villages and the cities, Joanna experiences the unique blend of old and new that is life in Greece today.

In episode one, Joanna begins her Greek odyssey at the Parthenon in Athens which was built by the ancient Greeks two and a half thousand years ago. From Athens she travels to the southern region of the Peloponnese where she visits spectacular mythical and historic sites, and experiences the perfect acoustics of an outdoor theatre via a performance by Nana Mouskouri. She meets villagers who communicate by whistling and a fisherman who takes her to the gates of Hades, once considered the gateway to the underworld by the Ancient Greeks.

Tuesday, 26 June 2012 on ABC1.
