Foxtel contest to topple ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!’

Foxtel launches a $10,000 contest to come up with a better national chant than that other one...

It’s practically unthinkable, but Foxtel wants to know if it’s time to replace “Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi.”

The Pay TV provider is hosting a contest ahead of the Olympics, offering a $10,000 prize to whoever can come up with a better chant.

Olympics presenter Matt Shirvington said, “I love ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie’..it’s become such a part of our culture and a truly unique voice to Australians. No matter where in the world you are, you know there is an Aussie in the crowd as soon as you hear it.

“England has their passionate ‘war cry’, to try and top that means a new chant would need to be pretty creative and simple at the same time.”

Every Australian is being encouraged to create a new national chant, film it and upload it to foxtel.com.au/sportingchants where entries will be whittled down to a final four on July 16.

The overall winner will be judged on “memorable lyrics and the ability to inspire” based on public votes and a panel of judge..

If “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” chant still turns out to be the favourite then the prize will go to the runner up, announced on July 24.

Points to Foxtel for dreaming up a contest that should attract social media debate. Might be a good first topic for Gruen Sweat to monitor….

  1. Count me in; I think Shirvo meant to say “you know there is a drongo in the crowd as soon as you hear it”.

Does someone with a better memory recall – perhaps it was Roy and HG – having a contest for an Olympic song?

  2. As a seventh generation Australian it makes me cringe every time I hear that bit of verbal nonsense.Anything with a few words of more than two syllables would have to be in with a show…

  3. “Memorable lyrics and the ability to inspire” should mean any combination of letters will better the inane “oi x 3” embarrassment.
