Rumour: All star-cast set for new ABC Drama

ABC's new drama Time of our Lives is assembling its best ensemble cast since The Slap.

TV Tonight hears more whispers on ABC’s next Drama series Time of Our Lives.

And by the looks of things, the broadcaster is assembling an all-star cast for this one -shaping up as its best ensemble since The Slap.

Set to feature in the series are:

Claudia Karvan,

Shane Jacobson,

Justine Clarke,

Stephen Curry,

William McInnes.

…and still more to come.

The relationship drama comes from writer / producers Amanda Higgs (Bed of Roses, East of Everything, The Librarians, Dirt Game, The Cut, The Secret Life of Us) and Judi McCrossin (Tangle, Beaconsfield, The Surgeon, The Secret Life of Us).

Next question will be seeing how some of those names pair up as on-screen couples.

The series is still unannounced by ABC but due to begin shooting in Melbourne soon.

Meanwhile ABC1’s telemovie Mabo is must-see TV this Sunday night.

  1. The only cast member in that list that would draw me to watch this program is Stephen Curry. The rest I can’t stand – particulary William McInnes who is never really “acting” but just standing there delivering lines. He always looks uncomfortable on camera and I’ve never seen him play one character that I’ve believed in.
Surely the ABC can do better than serve up this predictable dribble and same old over exposed actors. It sounds like another boring Bed of Roses type drama which they flogged for 3 nauseating series.

  2. Hopefully this series will be more like The Slap and less like recent execrable offerings such as Crownies, The Straits and Miss Fisher. Australian TV drama needs to start aiming at the benchmark set by shows such as The Wire, Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

  3. The problem i have with it is its the same bunch of actors doing a different show. To me its the same old same old here. Yes they are fantastic actors but its getting boring now.

  4. Zzzzzzz. Same old dreary faces. And Claudia Karvan is the complete reason not to watch something. Entirely lacking in warmth and incapable of indicating anything going on behind the eyes.

  5. Sounds great… except for the usual suspects being cast.
I’d use two big names and then lesser knowns to fill it out.

Getting sick of seeing some people on my TV screen, will watch the first Ep to give it a chance, but it will have to be damned good to keep me watching.

And I have a nasty feeling the ABC will flog it to death like ‘The Slap’ and that will put me off it!

  6. How much input does the producer have in these choices? This article makes it sound like the broadcaster is making these choices alone, which are a little same same it has to be said. I’d love to see Claudia back as a brunette.

  7. I enjoyed your footnote, David, hopefully certain “journalists” (quotation marks definitely deliberate!!) pay attention to your request 😉

  8. I understand star power is vital for funding and commissioning – but Claudia, Justine and William feature in so many shows and are so high profile. If this is an intimate drama – family or relationships, some inspired casting,(god knows there are so many great out of work actors at any one time) rather than big names, helps the believability of the content immeasurably – or else the viewer is too aware that it is a well known actor playing the role. The overuse of people like Kat Stewart (whom i love) and Justine, Claudia, Ben Mendelsohn, Richard Roxburgh actually steers me away from some shows. I may have missed out on more great drama by not supporting Tangle, but Kat Stewart is Billie Proudman for me, and every cast member of Offspring works. But feature them in simultaneous contemporary dramas, and the believability factor lessens – but that is me!
