Channel Seven has appointed former Herald Sun editor Simon Pristel as Director of News, Seven Melbourne.

He replaces Steve Carey immediately.

Pristel has been editor of the Herald Sun and Sunday Herald Sun for the past seven years.

The Managing Director of Seven Melbourne, Lewis Martin, said: “Simon arrives at Channel Seven at a perfect time. News is vital to our Melbourne viewers. Simon’s passion and skills in this area, together with his proven leadership ability, will provide an environment of success essential to the future of news delivery across a multi-platform environment.”

Pristel added, “It’s a great opportunity to bring my 23 years of experience and passion for news to TV.”

Steve Carey has had 25 years with Channel Seven, beginning as a reporter and working his way to News Director and will take a break before resuming with Seven in a role yet to be clarified.

“I’ve had a great run, we’ve broken a lot of stories and had a lot of success, but nothing is forever. It’s time to catch my breath and have some time with my family,” Carey said.

Lewis Martin added, “No job is more demanding than leading a news team. The fierce competition to be first and fresh is unrelenting. In this environment, Steve always cared about his people and getting the story to air before anyone else. He leaves a team with a history of success and well-placed to continue that success. Steve is to be congratulated on everything he has achieved.”

Seven News in Melbourne has a fight on its hands with Nine News having won 22 weeks in 2012. This follows five years of Seven wins.

  1. The new set has been in the pipeline for several months – it’s just a coincidence it’s being introduced at the same time that the knives are out and swinging.
Who will be next to go?

  2. “and have some time with my family,” Carey said.
Hmmm…seem to have heard that quite a bit lately. No one in HSV7 News worthy of a promotion?

  3. I have it confirmed from a close source that works at in TT that there’s a new set coming for seven news melb. they are spending big $$$ on it and will be relaunched after olympics

  4. Tabloidy indeed.
In recent years, newspapers have shrunk from broadsheet to tabloid to ipad.. while tvs have gone from standard to widescreen and viewmungous.
    Talk about dumbing down.
