This is why mayors don’t make good TV executives

The mayor of Sutherland Shire needs to realise there is such a thing as creating so much controversy that it just encourages people to tune in.

Seriously.

Does Carol Provan, the mayor of Sutherland Shire Council realise she is now giving TEN the best kind of publicity it could hope for The Shire?

It was one thing to protest the idea of a ‘local Jersey Shore‘ on Cronulla Beach, but there is also such a thing as creating so much controversy that it just encourages people to tune in.

Provan has warned that residents are considering protests and a potential boycott of advertisers.

“I’m sure a lot of people who advertise on the show will be thinking ‘Do I need to be putting my product out there with a tacky show like this?”‘ she said. “Time will tell.”

Perfect! A boycott plays right into TEN’s hands. See the show that has the locals outraged!

“I’m sure it’ll have great ratings on Monday night. I know we won’t be watching because we’re at council,” she said.

But she also told the Sydney Morning Herald that she was surprised by the latest promos.

“I suppose I’m feeling a bit relieved,” she said. “When I saw the last two promos, they’re looking a bit tame, which is good. I mean the girls are all looking pretty – pretty little blondes, a bit like Lara Bingle. It certainly didn’t look like what I expected.

“I thought it was going to be like Jersey Shore, that … they were going around to places where there was alcohol and filming young ones who were out of control doing stupid things – which happens in every community – it’s just a sign of the times.”

  1. The promos are diabolical. As if people in Sydney don’t dislike the Shire enough already, I predict the area is going to be a cringemaking laughing stock after this goes to air.

  2. Free publicity is good publicity (let’s face it, Ten is so broke that free is all they can afford). Also agree with you Goonies and Chris… the people are definitely not attractive, but so what? They may be nice people under all that fakery…

But we will never know as Ten will hide their personalities under just as much fakery. Anyone who thinks this will be anything approaching “real life” is clearly kidding themselves.

  3. I grew up in “The Shire” and spent most of my live at Cronulla Beach. I am embarrassed by what I am seeing in the promos. Please don’t insult our intelligence.

  4. I agree that the women are not attractive they are faked tanned with make up caked on (they even say they like fake on the promo)

Also these people better get use to criticism, they aint seen nothing yet

  5. @Jezza, I’m so with you. When I think of the state of TV, I can’t help but think of the movie “Idiocracy”…”… tells the story of two ordinary people taken into a top-secret military hibernation experiment to awaken in a dystopia wherein advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism run rampant and dysgenic pressure has resulted in a uniformly stupid human society devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and coherent notions of justice and human rights.”

  6. @ Darcey09 – I am not watching, I am being bombarded with promo ads whilst trying to watch things like Offspring, Neighbours and Masterchef.

My opinion is just as valid as anyone elses whether you agree with it or not and I absoutely stand by my comment that they are not pretty girls.

@ niccky – you called someone an ‘absolute clown’! There are differing degrees of insults in your mind are there?

  7. Its important to have a good balance on tv.Ulimately its about entertainment. Its great to have thought provoking shows but its also good to have some light hearted viewing where you dont need to do any thinking at all.Theres nothing wrong with that

  8. She must have lost her glasses.

I did not see any pretty girls in the promo at all, I saw overcooked, over made-up, overdone ‘chicks’ who should be heading down to the Snog, Marry, Avoid set.

As annoying as Lara can be she is a far prettier girl than anyone on the Shire ads.

  9. Wow see that.. her opinion actually gained some credibility once she had actually seen a bit of the offending show. Can’t believe she made it to the position of mayor!

  10. Without even realising she has just helped to lift The Shire’s profile. In alot of situations, any publicity is good publicity. In any case ive seen the promos on telly and it actually doesnt look too bad.
