US TV legend Andy Griffith, best known for The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, has died at the age of 86.

North Carolina’s WITN News reported Griffith died on Tuesday morning about 7 am. (US) at his home in Dare County, North Carolina.

Griffith is best remembered as the affable TV sheriff and star of The Andy Griffith Show, a role he played from 1960 to 1968 opposite then child star Ron Howard and bumbling deputy Don Knotts. He made a triumphant return to TV in the late 1980s in the legal drama Matlock.

Griffith was also an accomplished dramatic actor in movies like 1957’s A Face in the Crowd in which he played against type as a corrupt evangelical preacher. He continued to work into his older years, appearing in cameos in shows like Dawson’s Creek and the indie hit Waitress.

  1. For those only familiar with Andy Griffith’s work from “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Matlock”, check out the movie “A Face in the Crowd” It’s an amazing performance, as far from his characters in those shows as you could get and it’s subject matter is also very contemporary.

  2. I grew up watching “The Andy Griffith Show”.
Andy was always one of my favourites
    no matter what he did.
    RIP Andy.
Condolences to his family, friends & fans. 🙁
